The Graphic Narrative of War

The author does a nice job of explain the different type of comics as well as a brief history of the comic narrative. The first chapter touches on an orientation to the subject matter and well as military culture and cohesion with attention to the place of humor in the military environment. Also introduces humor types and trends in the military and the wars, as well as the comics function in the military setting.. The chapter also deals with kinds of humor from different branches of the military to difference sides of the battle comparing and contrasting. Showing also that humor is important during war/service.
Humor comes from many sources, including the GI, military life, hierarchy, the poor bugle blower, boredom, uniforms, how to wear a hat, latrines, KP duty, personal hygiene, appearance regulations, overcrowding, endless acronyms, health and shots, alcohol, jargon, saluting, rival branches, the enemy, terrain, location, opposite/same sex, etc. Also dealing with the horrors of war and military service and the struggles it creates when families are separated or constantly relocating. Plus the differences between military life and “normal” American life which don’t always coincide.
The conclusion was excellent and overall the book really made me feel differently about our citizens in service. The graphic narrative is an expression of those in the military.
The book shows that the author has done their homework and the material is presented in an analysis form, yet does not feel stiff or formulaic.
I enjoyed the book my only wish is that I wish there were more cartoons (but I figured that had to do with getting rights etc). But most of all I felt informed and I laughed.

Fascinating Study of Military Comics

A Remarkably Comprehensive Picture of Military Life through the Ages: its Humor, Struggles and Triumphs as seen in Cartoons
A lone cartoonist, with his or her pen and imagination, can at times show more in one panel than with hundreds of words. This book examines the drawings of artists from many countries, from the Civil War to the Iraq War, and backs up their work with meticulous notes and appendices. Much of what the cartoonists show us is a warrior’s handling of daily difficulties with realism, irony and humor. One is exposed to much information about the well knowns like Will Eisner and Bill Mauldin, but they also learn in detail about many lesser known artists and what they created. In a story about a Bill Mauldin cartoon, “…the men are making an amphibious landing, shells are bursting overhead, and Willie requests, “ Try to say sumpin’ funny, Joe.’ “ This, and many other stories and cartoons, made this book an excellent read that I would highly recommend. About the Author
Judith Butler is Maxine Elliot Professor in the Departments of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. Her books include Precarious Life: Powers of Mourning and Violence (Verso, 2003) and Undoing Gender (Routledge, 2004).

An accurate and detailed review of all aspects of lumbosacral disorders from a biomechanical perspective. This book has challenged my practice. Please note, this topic is complex and I had to take a course in the Canadian approach to more fully appreciate this work. I have read the entire book once and several chapters 2-3 times and can still find new information. Well worth the money

Thought-provoking treatise on Performing

Ridiculous Theatre : Scourge of Human Folly : The Essays and Opinions of Charles Ludlam is a true treasure for anyone ridiculous enough to consider a career as an artist. Ludlam, the actor/director/writer/artistic director of the Ridiculous Theatre, knows a lot about creating art and as a result of his experience, has some very strong opinions on the subject. Ludlam writes about what he knows and what he loves -- the theatre. The essays included in this anthology are extremenly insightful and thought-provoking as Ludlam proffers his opinions on every subject from critics to drag to opera (and everything in between). In the end, the reader comes to an understanding of the utter ridiculousness (in a truly wonderful way) of a theatrical life.

demented? genius? demented genius?

Charles Ludlam was, hands down, one of the most brilliant innovators in postmodern theatre. At a time when many radical theatre-types were resting on their laurels (or regurgitating works they created decades earlier), Ludlam and his constant collaborator/companion, Everett Quinton, were experimenting with new forms, keeping things fresh. Unfortunately (or perhaps not), he's been pidgeonholed by theatre historians as working exclusively in gay theatre; in point of fact, though, while his audience was largely "downtown" and therefore predominantly gay, his influence was felt throughout theatre community.
That's not, however, to say he was a benevolent gay genius. On the contrary: secondhand stories about his professional habits and beliefs are enough to curl the toes of even the cruelest tyrant. That, of course, is why this book is SO enjoyable--and important. Part autobiography, part manifesto, it explains Ludlam's ideas about art, life, and theatre in his own words. And while it's certainly polemic at times, it's very enlightening and always entertaining.

Absolutely indispensible

This book is one of the few books of Shakespearean scholarship that I have read which I find completely, unequivocably indispensible. If you have ever been interested in just how Will Shakespeare does what he does with language, Prof. McDonald's book is the one to read. Thorough but not overlong, it is actually a speedy read.
As for spotchboy, there is absolutely NO evidence for an authorship controversy. This "identity question" was created by bored, insipid people who have a penchant for conspiracy theories. Prof. McDonald ignores that question because there is no issue to discuss, and the book deals with the arts of language. I wish the self-proclaimed "anti-Stratfordians" would realize the arts of scholarship. But it is refreshing to see that even they can realize how great a piece of scholarship this is.

Pardon the pun

There is something rather quaint, nowadays, about focusing on Shakespeare's language. Attending to such things as rhetoric and metre might seem a bit passé. Aware of this, Russ McDonald defends his study of Shakespeare's verbal arts by claiming that language is central to an understanding and appreciation of his work. Refreshingly, he also takes pains to emphasise that the clever use of such language features gives rise to reading pleasure. The process of unlocking metaphors is not arid and academic, in his view, but fundamentally rewarding.

This is by no means the same old guide to Shakespeare's language in new clothing. Although it occasionally elucidates those technical terms so beloved of Greek rhetoricians and Elizabethan theorists, and although it is often in broad agreement with the conventional view of the playwright's development (that alliterative patterns gradually become more subtle, and that end-stopped lines increasingly give way to enjambment, for example), this study presents an illuminating discussion of language, and it enhances and complements recent trends in various disciplines.

Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the chapter on puns: 'Double Talk'. Far from constituting Shakespeare's Achilles heel, as Dr Johnson so famously argued, the much-maligned pun is seen as an integral part of his fascination for doubles - in fact, for 'likeness in difference' in all its manifestations, where puns take their place alongside twins, sets of brothers (Old Hamlet/Claudius; Edgar/Edmund), double plots, parallel circumstances etc. However annoying they might be to some, puns have a function, McDonald argues. Socially, they provide a subversive but safe means for characters to defy their superiors, by deliberately misconstruing and redirecting meaning; politically, and more seriously, wordplay becomes the battlefield on which substitution of meaning anticipates the substitution of monarch; and structurally, they embody what he calls 'the unreliability of the verbal sign'. To MacDonald, the pun is nothing less than a trope that allows for intellectual sparring, demonstrates the vulnerability of language and equips Shakespeare with the mental gymnasium he needs in order to exercise his imagination.

A thoroughly convincing and highly readable contribution to the field of Shakespeare's language that extends beyond language and mere labels. For McDonald, 'Words are considerably more than words'. Ideal both for the non-expert (who doesn't mind having obscure meanings glossed in quotations and alliteration highlighted typographically) and for the more serious student. Vital reading.

Serious fun

Good footnotes, well-done index, extensive list of suggested scholarly books on Shakespeare topics, tell you this is a serious book. The discussions of figures, meter, Elizabethan English give you an idea of how deeply McDonald will dig into Shakespeare. But you can easily forget this counts as an "I read a worthy book this week" candidate because it is so enjoyable. Many of us love Shakespeare, but few people write about Shakesepeare's methods so lightly and insightfully. You will come away with some new thoughts and insights and an overpowering urge to go read a few plays again.

Professor George Bruce, has 30 years’ industrial experience in shipbuilding, including more recent roles in facilities development, research and innovation. He currently teaches and conducts research at the Newcastle University School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle, UK.

Former lecturer in Naval Architecture at Plymouth University, UK, and former Manager of Policy and Standards Development with the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better

I was hoping that this book of Ship Construction would have graphics defining how the ship is put together with photos and drawings in today's construction methods. Unfortunately it does not fill the bill. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better at illustrating the construction techniques from the mid 1950's. There have been updated versions subsequent to the book edited by David Arnott. There is also a better book put out by Reed's series on ship design which has line drawings to illustrate the construction techniques which has been updated over the years. I wish that Mr. Bruce's book did more illustrating of the bow structure, the stern framework, the double bottom tankers strength members, and the strength members and plating which are integrated to make the ship strong and seaworthy.
