'This lovely book is clearly written by someone who has been immersed in reading faces all her life and who spent twenty years before writing it, studying further from Chinese medical and other texts and from family members. It clearly lays out all the theories and principles of face reading, mostly relating to understanding personality ( but also in a final chapter to medical diagnosis) and illustrates these with numerous black and white and colour photographs.

This is simply the best book on face reading that we have seen, and if the subject fascinates you, you just have to get it.'

Interesting...wish I had purchased the hard copy

I love my Kindle reader, but some books are better in hard copy, and this is one of them. I view the book as a reference one that you may read from cover to cover, but more than likely you will want to look things up. It is difficult to do that in the Kindle format.

Unfamiliar with Chinese medicine, I had a hard time maintaining reference points, I kept thinking through my Western understanding and found something's confusing, again, probably would do better being able to "thumb" back a few pages to reconnect.

With "Face Reading in Chinese Medicine - Second Edition" professor Lillian Pearl Bridges has expanded and deepened the ancient Chinese Facial Diagnosis with her unique, extensive, modern and new knowledge. Making diagnoses is much easier and more precise by using its in-depth information about emotions and organ disturbances according to the Five Elements in Chinese Medicine. I use this valuable diagnostic method daily in my practice of acupuncture and physiotherapy in the Netherlands.
It was an honor to me that my friend Lillian asked me to make all the color photos which are published in this book and in February 2013 I will travel to Los Angeles to follow her first Master Face Reading Program! Also to learn more about how to recognize in the face what kind of capacities someone has inherited and how that information can help a person on his or her (Golden) Path!
The book is indispensable for all acupuncturists, all specialists/therapists in Oriental Medicine and Philosophy, for any person who is interested in this field and a must for the Western trained physician to gain new insights to use in the every day practice. You see so much better who you're talking with and what that person has experienced in life. Clients love to hear what you tell about them because it's so impressive and right!
The Second Edition gives lots of information about the Five Elements, Taoism, Shen, mental problems but also about organ problems and for example showing where to recognize neck and back problems on the nose! While doing an intake and watching your client you are diagnosing already!
This profound book is written in very clear and legible English. A must have with a beautiful hardcover and 230 new photos!

Hi Oxwood. Thank you for taking the time to comment on the book. As one of its co-editors, I'll try to address your points.

- Instrumentals were omitted to narrow the millions of choices. It's not a decision I necessarily support, but there was a rationale behind it.

- The index - while unconventional - is perfectly comprehensible, and the arranging of artists by first initials will be instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with iTunes.

- While I wouldn't dispute the worth of The Allman Brothers, they weren't a big deal in Britain (where the book was produced), so I'm afraid they didn't make the shortlist. (However, our US publishers didn't suggest them either.)

- The ten artists that you've highlighted are all represented in the book; some with, in our view, more interesting choices from the same album (e.g. "War Pigs," from Paranoid, "When the Levee Breaks," from Led Zeppelin IV, and "Bring the Noise" from It Takes A Nation of Millions...).

- I take full responsibility for including "Amazing" and not campaigning for "Dream On." As a long-time Aerosmith fan, I think "Amazing" is a much better song!

- Inevitably, given the millions of available choices, we were never going to satisfy every reader. However, as the book ranges from commercial smashes to cult hits, and from Mississippi to Mali, there's plenty to discover. I would urge you to listen to Elvis Presley's "Tomorrow is a Long Time" and Oumou Sangare's "Diaraby Nene" - both featured in the book, and both songs that I'm very happy to have heard before I die!

Great Resource for Exploring New Songs and Favorites

This book has a similar look and feel for those familiar with 1001 Albums with great pictures, nice format and layout, and interesting song and artist background. I found this to be a great resource for (re-)exploring both well known songs and lesser known nuggets. The selections cover a broad range of periods and styles. Many are obvious choices such as Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I'd caution against expecting either the 1001 or "10,001 to Download" to be a definitive "best" song list. The variety of editors bring some great choices together, however such a task is just not possible, nor the intent, but this does mean that you will find some expected songs missing. Not making either list includes some of my personal favorites from Michael Jackson (Billie Jean), the Rolling Stones (Gimme Shelter), though about 30 Stones' songs make the 10,001, or Allman Brothers (Midnight Rider), or Joy Division (New Dawn Fades), while room for five Spice Girls songs on the 10,001 seemed generous in this context.

All in all, this doesn't knock it down from 5-stars for me, I know and listen to the songs I like without this book, but it gives me plenty to explore and enjoy, which is just what I had hoped for.

It's been five years since Robert Dimery compiled the collection "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" and now with the music world returning to its roots as a singles based medium, it's a perfect time for this series to surface the best songs of all time.

This completely subjective report (as Dimery gladly admits) is a veritable jukebox in book form. Spanning the decades from the pre-50's to the 00's, Dimery and his contributors have compiled a list ranging from the obvious (R.E.S.P.E.C.T.) to the obscure (Captain Beefheart's "Big Eyed Beans from Venus") to hundreds of musical slices in between.

Each of the selections are accompanied by a story of the history, the behind the scenes and/or the influence the song had on others. In addition to full credits, there are boxes on certain entries that indicate cover versions and which songs influenced which others. In all cases, the original releases provide the template, with later credits (samples, etc) added where appropriate. There is also an intro by famed Bowie producer, Tony Visconti.

The book concludes with a list of 10,000 songs (listings only) that you must download before you die. Though the book has a bit of an international lean in places (many songs from the UK, France, Africa, etc. are simply unknown in the states) it serves as both a treasure trove of great songs you may have forgotten from the past, as well as a jumping off point for a wide berth of new musical territory to explore for quite a while. Pure fun.

Secrets, suspicions, seduction, sweet sparks and surprises...Scrumpdiliumptious!

I didn't really fall in love with this series until this third installment. The first two books are Dragon Knight's Sword (Order of the Dragon Knights Book 1) and Dragon Knight's Medallion (Order of the Dragon Knights Book 2)...are both good mythological stories. But this third installment FINALLY pulled me into its grasp and I connected. I don't know why...maybe it just took me two installments to warm up to this paranormal adventure of faeries, dragons, feuding clans and sworn enemies...time travel, druids, and...oh let's see what else...relics, ancient artifacts, curses and legends. I love romance, but not when it overwhelms a plot. And this story had just enough romantic edge without overpowering the development of the story.

Alistair MacKay is a scarred, half Fae Dragon Knight who gains his power from the earth. Alistair is huge...a giant of a warrior. He has long black hair and emerald green eyes that shift to peridot when his fae self rises. He's full of bitter rage from the death of his only sister, for which he blames himself. To punish himself, he sails the sea and stays off land. He is the most powerful of his three brothers (who are all gifted with their own powers). Alistair carries a dark "beast" within himself. I never could figure out if this beast (or demon) was symbolic meaning his rage and bitterness...or if he had an actual second persona living within him. (??). At any rate, this beast sometimes takes on a life of its own and overpowers Alistair's tormented self.

Fiona O'Quinlan lives in the 21st century. She's a 24 y/o researcher of historical tablets and alphabets, translating and documenting them. She loves living in the past. She comes alive and connects with medieval history. It's her passion. Fiona is a petite, curly black haired/blue eyed sweetheart. She's kind and giving...she is no ordinary woman.

This story is like two roads that run parallel to each other, but are in different era's. Our two protagonists proceed down their individual roads in different times...and they are slowly beginning to to intersect until one falls into the time of the other. In this case, Fiona lands 800 yrs. in Medieval Ireland. And once they meet, Alistair takes it upon himself to take Fiona to the O'Quinlans of medieval times. And what better way for our two protagonists to over overcome their differences and fight their attraction than on a long journey?

This story reiterates (from the first two books)..the "great evil" that is spreading throughout Scotland as well as two feuding clans. It brings back Duncan/Brigid (from book #1) and Stephen/Aileen (book #2)...with a satisfying update that brought a smile to my face. Character descriptions are strong and dialogue is balanced nicely with narrative. I never felt like I was sitting in a boring history class. The "sinister drama" is weak...it comes and goes quickly. But there are no loose threads...no holes. And it finishes with a nice set up for the fourth and final installment of the oldest brother...Angus' story.

Highland HEA -- Yeah!

In this third Order of the Dragon Knights series, Alistair and Fiona are the protagonists. Alistair in the 13th century is one of four brother knights "de-knighted" after the death of their sister. His power comes from the land so he keeps to the sea to punish himself for his hand in his sister's death. Fiona, in the 21st century is taken back to the 13th century, kidnapped by slavers and bought by Alistair (who is entirely against slavery). And the complications continue. Fiona is the keeper of Alistair's relic axe. On their journey to the Great Glen to cleanse the axe and return it to Alistair many challenges are encountered. Slowly and cautiously love builds between them. As with the previous books, HEA happens eventually and is woven with care throughout the entire story of 13th century Scotland. A fine read with lots of great information and fine characters to admire.

As With the prior 2 books in the series,Dragon Knight Axe is pure magic...If i could give it more stars, I absolutely would...Ms. Morgans ability to bring words to life is astounding, Her characters complex & well-devloped. This is Alstairs & Fionas story,though the other 2 books were amazing, this resounded deep within me...My favorite by far,if you read nothing else this year..READ THIS !! Marys more then a writer, she's a master storyteller that leaves you in awe....Thank you for the amazing adventure

It's getting me by

The words - basic and easy to read DO NOT come to mind when I review this text - as some others have stated. This class is very difficult. There are a lot of terms to remember. I am only half way through the course and I do not feel like I am learning anything from this text. That being said, my course is 7 weeks. It is a lot harder to get out of the material what you want to when you need to speed through it to finish your final project.

I rented this book for an Introductory Research class. While it's a fairly dry read, it will teach you everything you need to know about research methods, design types, the scientific method, ethics, and how to properly conduct an experiment.

I really like the writing style

For a textbook, there is a bit of humor. Each chapter stands on its own so important information is defined again in other chapters as it relates to the new chapter. Its a great reference if you need to write a research paper. Also, it has examples of APA pages/sections along with the information that should be included in each section.

Good Reference Handbook for Fan Engineering

As a new engineer in the industrial fan industry, I found this book informative and a good buy. If you can look past the awful conversions from F to Kelvin (Somehow he uses K = F + 460, when in reality it is K = C + 273.15). I trust the rest of the book and I would recommend for anyone in the fan industry (Sales, engineer, marketing, etc.).

Not bad, but not over the fence, either.

As a basic primer on fan concepts, this is a good book. It also serves as a sort of non-engineer's guide to fan design and allows someone with very little knowledge or experience create a fan design of some reasonable worth.
Unfortunately, I was looking for a bit more of an in depth aerodynamic study and have yet to find a piece of literature that I like. I understand that many of the older books on cascade aerodynamics are quite good, but they are no longer in publication, and this didn't really satisfy my interests.
Particularly annoying to me is the lack of derivation of the methodology in the fan design section. Some basic magic formulas are given and then tied together with some basic velocity diagrams to yield a fan blade design methodology.

Great book with excellent explanations. Covers fan selection and fan design. In depth explanation of fan laws and application of the fan laws. Seems that Bleier's experience is primarily in centrifugal blowers, but does cover some axial fans.

Class vs. Sexuality

Didier Eribon is a distinguished French journalist and scholar, whose origins are in the working class. He argues in this book that he faced much more difficulty crossing class boundaries than he did living as a gay man. His account of the difficulties he had making his way through school is convincing and moving. Yet it is not clear whether the resistance came more from the upper classes not wanting someone from the working class or the resistance came from the gravitation pull of his working class origins. Perhaps it is impossible to say.

Academically sound but misses the point
By death metal and black metal
Weinstein here executes an academically well-trained description of the heavy metal genre, but in doing so agglutinates several generations of metal into one pseudo-genre which, not surprisingly, does not fit the broader conclusions academics must draw from sociological studies. This book repeats the classic error of all academics in assuming all metal is Motley Crue or derivates thereof, and consequently, the book is completely obsolete in the current time. Well-written and smoothly flowing it is an afternoon's read and provides great supporting evidence for any mainstreaming or assimilation of the heavy metal lifestyle in academia.

The Ultimate Book on Heavy Metal

This is the bible of Heavy Metal for Metalheads throughout the world. I have scoured the universities and libraries for books regarding H.M., and this book is not only the best, but is referenced with awe and respect by every other text discussing H.M. If you love Metal, you MUST own this book. While it might seem slightly outdated (1991 - 1992 published), it is a fascinating look at H.M., and provides key information on the development of H.M., the dreaded P.M.R.C. and Metal detractors (always a favorite topic), and H.M. social status, plus much more. There is (thank God) a new Weinstein book about Metal coming out in April 2000 called "Heavy Metal: The Music and Its Culture", and it's in paperback form, no less! Cheap books are good. I hope Deena has written another top notch book, because "H.M.: A Cultural Sociology" is perhaps the best damn non-fiction book I have ever read. Extremely informative, completely objective (yet written by a Metalhead), ever extensive, this book is worth every damn cent!

Definitivamente estamos ante un libro de gran calidad y que conste que no lo digo por ser un metalhead. La autora ha sabido dividir el tema en las partes pertinentes para un efectivo análisis. La cultura del heavy metal, efectivamente, puede verse como la interacción de los media, las bandas y los fans y el concierto de heavy metal como una Metal Epiphany. Esto hasta cierto punto es arbitrario pero no podemos negar que es de una consistencia útil. A lo largo de las páginas de este libro podemos encontrar cosas tales como el origen del nombre del metal, su evolución, la tenaz lucha que ha tenido contra los sectores más oscurantistas del sociedad occidental pero no sólo ello. También se muestra una abstraccion de los elementos de nuestra cultura metalera que permite sacar a la luz características como la ética del guerrero que se encuentra inmersa en el metal, el mensaje de que todo está mal y que no hay nada que podamos hacer para cambiar las cosas salvo el trabajar para nuestra propia superación individual. Además el libro nos muestra una enorme facilidad para comprender las metáforas del metal y de como la música prima sobre el mensaje verbal. Por otro lado, y esto es importante, también se hace mención de los defectos del metal como la Homofobia y el machismo, dos defectos que parecen se están superando. Es pues este libro, muy recomendable tanto para headbanguers como para cualquiera que quiera acercarse al metal con espiritu crítico y abierto. ¡Gloria eterna la metal!
