This memoir by a former New York heroin kingpin—reportedly the inspiration for the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and the movie New Jack City, among others—pulsates with the criminal street life it depicts so well. In the 1970s, Barnes, a former junkie, built a heroin operation that delivered tens of millions of dollars worth of dope annually to the New York area. He became a street hero for his flamboyant lifestyle. Using a heavy dose of street slang to add flavor, Barnes portrays a dangerous but exciting life, the allure of the money and power he and his associates accrued, even as the drug trade sowed the seeds of their destruction. With documentary filmmaker Folsom's help, Barnes shows how he built his empire, creating a ruthlessly efficient drug organization modeled after the Mafia and known as "The Council." Barnes's ability to elude prison earned him the nickname Mr. Untouchable, but eventually prosecutors caught up to him, and in 1977 he was sentenced to life in prison. Eventually, Barnes turned state's evidence, earned his release in 1998 and joined the federal Witness Protection Program. Tom Folsom is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Mad Ones: Crazy Joe Gallo and the Revolution at the Edge of the Underworld. Folsom is also a writer, director, and producer of documentaries, and his work has appeared at Sundance and on A&E and Showtime. He lives in New York City with his wife.

Amazing

This book really had me hooked from the start. I read it a few months ago in 2 days. He really could have been a huge business man just like everyone else is saying. He was so smart and savvy. He had the brains to do anything, but instead took the wrong path. Does a nice job explaining what life was like as a drug king-pin and takes you through his rise and fall. A truly interesting read.

A Glitch in the Matrix Binding

I adore this volume of Matrix Comics. I never read them online, but after seeing all three movies again recently (and Animatrix), these comics are a wonderful supplement to anyone wanting more... or wanting more clarification. The artwork is fantastic and diverse, and the writing is odd and strangely filled with truths as well as more questions on existence. Considering that many of the stories were written before the first Matrix film hit theaters makes these stories more intriguing and creative. I love the artists and writers who signed on to work on this project, and I can't wait to get Volume 2.

My biggest gripe with Volume 1 is that the trade paperback began falling apart on the first reading. Perhaps I was a bit too rough (which I don't think I was), but considering that I owned it for 5 minutes before the pages of the first story began coming loose means it was not properly bound. I'm a little gentle Asian guy, much like the Keymaker (but I'm not that old... yet).

So before I had finished reading the third story, I got frustrated by my slowly-page-flaking book and carefully opened the book wide every two pages to assist in letting the rest of the pages "fall out" with a little help. It took a bit of care and restraint, but I took the whole 160 pages out very carefully over about an hour (while watching TV) and then took it to Kinko's to have it bound with plastic coil. That cost $5, but was worth it to be able to read it in one piece again. Nevertheless, the pages are high-quality and should hold up quite well now.

I highly suggest this trade paperback for anyone who enjoyed the first Matrix film... and perhaps if you didn't like the sequels, then perhaps this trade will help foster your desire to go back and give them another chance with a greater appreciation of the world the Brothers created from the beginning. And be prepared to take your trade to Kinko's for minor repairs (that are well-worth having done).

Excellent expansion of the Matrix mythology

Like the "Animatrix" shorts, this book is a clever expansion into the Matrix universe -- 12 comic book stories (well... 11 comic book stories and one prose short story) that tell new tales playing with the toys the Wachowskis created. It's not essential reading for people who are fans of the movies but just want to know what's going on, but most of the stories in this book are clever and inventive in their own right.
Ted McKeever's entry may be the best in the book -- the story of a woman who, when given a choice between a blue pill and a red pill, chose the blue. The Wachowskis chime in with their own story, about the robot B1-66ER, whose murder of its owner sparked the first war between humans and machines -- this story in particular tied in with The Animatrix. Neil Gaiman, one of the best writers on the planet these days, did a short story with a couple of illustrations rather than a comic book story. His tale, about a man forced to live several lives in the Matrix, plays with the nature of time the way the films play with the nature of reality. It's one of the standouts.
A couple of the stories are just so-so -- John Van Fleet and Bill Sienkiwicz, I'm afraid, didn't add too much to the world of the Matrix, but the rest of the stories are fantastic. Recommended for anyone who wants to delve deeper into this still-fascinating world.

More of a curiousity...

I found most of the stories in this book to be kind of average. The Neil Gaiman story was pretty good. As for the illustrations that accompanied it, I thought the first illustrations were the best.

Ted McKeever's story is very good because it treats the Matrix like the real world with a character that has great depth for a short piece of fiction. And the art was very original for this story, too.

I also liked "Hunters and Collectors", but I'm a sucker for any loose analogies or retellings of Melville's classic story.

The art, for the most part of this book is great. It's the writing that doesn't perform as well as I expected. Most of the stories don't take any chances or take you to different ground in the Matrix world, with the exception of McKeever & Gaiman's stories.

I'd recommend the book as a curiosity piece to anyone's library.

Smart Inventory Solutions - a refreshing read!

Smart Inventory Solutions was a great find! It is an excellent resource for those looking to understand and optimize inventory, spare parts in particular. It was an easy read, conversational in tone with a wealth of very practical actions including a step wise action plan for inventory optimization and cash savings. I'm a doctoral student and supply chain consultant doing research on spare parts planning and it was refreshing to read a book devoid of difficult to implement theoretical concepts. This book reflects the real world of spare parts challenges. I believe that this book can help the spare parts practitioner make a real difference.

This is a very good book

The book has explained in a very lucid and easy to read style the various nuances of inventory management and dealt specifically on engineering spares. The author has done a great job and done full justice to the title of this book delivering to the readers the underlying principles of inventory management and optimization.

A very good guide and support for your exam

I bought this book in order to prepare myself for my Engeneering exam (In México: Exámen Profesional)and graduate in Electrical-Mechanical Eng. For all Engeneering students and "pasantes" in México, this book is a very good summary of "carreras" such as IME, IM, IE, and IMA. It covers theory, concepts and problems in all fields of Engineering, it is written and edited very clear, easy to understand and follow. From basics of Math thru Statics, Thermodinamics, Electricity, electronics, power systems, economics, materials science, etc you will find a single and reliable source for study. Are you too busy to review, again, ALL the Eng. books you bought when in "la carrera" ? Do not know where to start? Are you going to apply for "CENEVAL exam"? Great Math curriculum

I can't say enough good about Saxon Math curriculum, especially for homeschoolers. It is all laid out for you and is just enough new concept to keep things interesting, but not too difficult. There is lots of review which I think is the only way the kids really get to KNOW the material. Wish I had used this a year earlier when I just tried to wing it myself. There are 120 lessons and they take my 9 year old about an hour to complete. Some more, some less.

There is a warm up "test" for each lesson. 5/4 starts out reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts but then moves to multiplication and division. My daughter finally learned her math facts with this book. Tests and worksheets are a necessary part of the curriculum, don't go without them.

Saxon Tests and Worksheets 5/4

This book is essential for Saxon Math 5/4. It provides daily timed tests, supplemental materials, tests, record sheets for timed tests and daily work, and suggested worksheets for use with the textbook. I like how Saxon Math has built in review. It is a gentle, spiral approach math for learners in 5th grade.

To be honest, I used Saxon 1 and Saxon 2 and intensely disliked both. The material seemed tedious and took 1 to 2 hours per day to cover. I returned to Saxon in this level and found it was just what my student needed. It has made my student more confident and more skillful in math. I highly recommend this level and the levels that follow.

I LOVE Saxon Math!!!

I bought just the "Tests and Worksheets" book because we bought the whole package last year and worked through it with our 8 year old.....now she's 9 and we are going through the math a second time to really reinforce her math foundation. (before that, she was struggling immensely) I love Saxon Math---I love how it repeats everyday and builds. It saved our daughter from drowning in math, even early on in her life and it is building a great foundation.

Hilarious stories of comical characters...writing was sub par

I would NOT recommend this book to just anyone. Unless you have an affection for games of chance and/ or Las Vegas in general, it probably is not the book for you. That being said, if you have a taste for "Sin City," this is a must-read.

Konik paints vivid pictures of cunning, baffling, and hilarious individuals that are willing to lose it all on any given day. He extensively covers all the major games of chance, including some that are lesser known. He obviously knows these games on a personal level, and it shows through his words.

Konik's choice of language is probably the biggest shortcoming of this book. He uses word choices that is beyond appropriate for this particular audience. My guess is that most readers of this book are unfamiliar with words of such magnitude as "perspicacious" or "verisimilitude." Not to say that these words are too big to learn, but my guess is that most readers didnt go reaching for their dictionary.

In summary, it was really funny and lighthearted, but could have used additional editing.

Quick hitters with substance

I have probably given this book out as presents to at least a half dozen people since it's release. Although I don't want to jump on the person who gave the book 3*, they were completely missing the point.

This book was ranked #2 on the Wall Street Journal's list of the 5 best books on gambling.

This book opens up with the ultimate risk taker, Brian Zembic. A man who will take a bet on everything, and lives up to it. To be perfectly honest, as mentioned, it only takes up about 10-15% of the book, but I don't want it to take up more. As one of the other 5* reviewers said, the worst part of the book is that it stops.

We read bios on Trump, Walsh, Jordan, and Woods, but here we read "mini-bios" on a differnet style of person. Andrew Beyer, Roxy Roxborough, Archie Karas, Johnny Moss. You read about how odds are made, how blackjack is played, and how comps get you paid. Poker, Horse Racing, Backgammon, Sports Betting, Blackjack... on and on... But don't think its just about this, they are stories that put you inside, and you don't want to leave.

Obviously the book leans towards people who enjoy the art of gambling, but also to those curious about why they don't gamble. My favorite story in the book is the very last one, "The Hand That's Dealt". Konik knows how to paint a picture with words. The story takes place at a poker table, but it's the furthest thing from a poker story.

Overall, without a doubt, Excellent.

Fantastic, you'll wish it was longer.

This is one of the many "gambling milieu" books that have hit the scene over the course of the past few years; although, unlike many of the others, Konik's effort features strong writing and a furious pace. Upon finishing it, I took a look at the page numbers because I couldn't believe it was over. It wasn't that it was too short, the real problem was that it was too good. In small chip size pieces, Konik addresses the infamous world of gambling. His coverage is far better than that of the average commentator as he includes horse racing, greyhounds, blackjack, sports betting, and golf hustling within his narrative. To say this one is fascinating is an understatement. A better description is that it will even, dare I say, appeal to the general public--and, indeed, it has. The title essay concerns crazy proposition man Brian Zembic, and it may well be the best of the compilation. After all, how many people become quasi-transvestites for 100 grand? Well, that's the terrain you're in once you open these pages, and you'll be grateful that Konik did such a magnificent job of immersing himself in it.

About the Author
 A.J. (Lonnie) Strickland received a BS in Math and Physics from the University of Georgia, an MS in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a PhD from Georgia State university. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Strategic Management in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Alabama. He has done extensive consulting and research work. In recent years, he was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award for the Graduate School of Business, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award for the University of Alabama.

John E. Gamble is currently Associate Dean and Professor of Management in the Mitchell College of Business at the University of South Alabama. His teaching specialty at USA is strategic management and he also conducts a course in strategic management in Germany, which is sponsored by the University of Applied Sciences in Worms. Dr. Gamble's research interests center on strategic issues in entrepreneurial, health care, and manufacturing settings. His work has been published in various scholarly journals and he is the author or co-author of more than 50 case studies published in an assortment of strategic management and strategic marketing texts. He has done consulting on industry and market analysis for clients in a diverse mix of industries. Professor Gamble received his Ph.D. in management from the University of Alabama in 1995. Dr. Gamble also has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama.

I purchased this book for my class I am taking in college. It was mandatory to get the book so I got it on Amazon as a rental.
I like this book. The chapters are short and to the point. Lots of details and diagrams to help you understand the information. So far so good.
