In my view the best mid/advanced level WP book written to date

Let me preface this review by saying this is NOT a beginner Wordpress book. That said, the folks who leave a mediocre review for this book due to this being over their head are ridiculous. If your looking for a book that teaches you "how to get started" with wordpress this is not your book. You will NOT find sections on how to create a post, add tags, install plugins, etcetera. This book is to teach you how to do advanced secure installs, understand the wordpress framework, template tags (the code snippets that make things work), how to create themes and plugins, and start working with some examples.

This book was an amazing for me because of where I am at in my wordpress development. Before reading this book I knew how to install wordpress, set up permalinks, work with .htaccess files, create posts, add plugins, and even do some minor tweaking. I did not however understand the core code concepts of wordpress that make it work, thus I could not advance beyond an "advanced beginner." When I would go to read advanced wordpress books they were all written in techie speak and I always ended up feeling lost.

Enter Smashing Wordpress:

From the moment I started reading this book it was right at the level I needed. I had finished my knowledge of the beginner to mid level stages of wordpress and Smashing Wordpress took me to a solid level of advanced wordpress techniques and theme/plugin building. It is written in PLAIN ENGLISH and not techie speak like most advanced technology books (please remember you must have a solid beginner level understanding or this book will seem complicated).

If your looking to start understanding all that code that makes themes and plugins work and you have a solid understanding of the basics of wordpress this book is for you.

From the very first chapter this book I stated to absorb the wordpress code concepts and advanced techniques I was craving to learn. I am half way through this book and I am quickly becoming the advanced wordpress theme creator that I have been wanting to be. (This book will also give you a solid ability to modify even the most advanced themes)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO WORDPRESS USERS READY TO UNDERSTAND AND BUILD OR MODIFY WORDPRESS THEME AND PLUGINS.

Spectacular Content/Poor Book Design

I am fairly new to web design and wordpress theme development and have been searching for ways to go beyond the typical wordpress theme. This book gives you exactly what it says it will. It really does go beyond the blog. This is by far the most thorough wordpress themeing book I have found. The content within this book is dense and every bit of it is useful.

I would not recommend this book to the absolute beginner unless you really like jumping headfirst into the very deep end. You really need to have at least a moderate understanding of html css and php to get through this book. The author is able able to cover as much as he does in large part by assuming you can keep up.

The biggest problem with this book and the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is the layout. I have heard this complaint regarding other books from smashing magazine and unfortunately it is very true. The guys at smashing mag are brilliant web designers but would do well to hire some equally brilliant print designers to layout their books. The biggest problem is the inner margins of the book. They have been designed as though this book were to be read on a vertical blog with identical margins on both pages instead of reflected margins resulting in having to force the book open to read the left page. Sorry to go on about this but it really is a big problem and I hope they will fix this in future versions (or at least in future publications).

Pros:
1. Spectacular content not found in any other single book
2. Covers up and coming wordpress features such as child themes
3. Tutorials for designing functioning job boards, faq knowledge bases, e-commerce sites, portfolio sites and more
4. 2 chapters on functions.php and plugin development
5. Too many great things content wise to list!

Cons:
1. Not recommended for the beginner
2. Layout of the book is quite poor and makes reading difficult

Overall:
If you are serious about creating your own wordpress themes and have experience with css html and php then this is absolutely the book you want.

A spectacularly bad book

OK. I'm not a wordpress beginner; I'm not a computer newbie. I have installed, configured and developed with wordpress as a CMS professionally and installed it to run blogs. I have a higher degree in computer science. I say this because I want to be absolutely clear that this book is bad for anyone at any level.

The book is badly written. It makes no attempt at all to introduce things in an orderly way. I had a more confident grasp of themes *before* I read the chapters on themes than after! Terminology is not regularly explained and where it is the explanations are sometimes of a vague, kind of, sort of like this variety and then the author moves swiftly on.

Instructions are often incomplete. This is a problem because the *context* is not made clear. You can tell me to finish off some settings without being very explicit *if* you've made it clear *where* those are to be found. If you don't then it's just frustrating.

There is no progressive nature either overall or in individual topics. You jump in and jump around and if you persevere you may just make it back to sure.

This book has no use to a beginner and no use to anyone more advanced. This isn't because it tackles intermediate or advanced topics but because it's written by someone who has little idea of instructional writing and no talent for clarity of exposition. If you are a beginner I'd go with Wordpress Complete or Headfirst Wordpress and if you're after something more advanced then the Wrox design and develop book.

Agree - one of the best books on world politics

My wife, actually attended courses with Organski at U of Michigan and she kept his book and passed it to me. Very clear and insightful framework for understanding the dynamics of the rise and fall of great powers. My edition was 1968 and Organski accurately layed out the likely evolution of the Soviet Union, China, EU and the US. Excellent background to the tensions now taking place in E Europe and the way China is engaging the world as it grows in economic power. Without prejudice, outlines the challenges that totalitarian and party-dominated governments present to democracies. Really a must read!

Organski came up with the fundamental theories which explain about how nations change over time. He explains the causes of war and how countries evolve over time. It is the complete explanation of how the world works. In my opinion it is the best book ever written !!!!!!!

A gripping page turner that makes you hungry for more.

Evans debut is quite a read.
The pacing is spot on. My only gripe would be that it should the starting point for a young adult novel series as opposed to a one shot short story because there are a few unsolved mysteries mainly in regards to the main characters headaches.
I am not one to read a lot of fiction but I actually look forward to reading more of what Evans produces.
He definitely has the makings of a good horror author.

Suzuki is an Asian-Canadian geneticist, environmentalist, and television personality. His 1991 "Declaration of Interdependence" has attracted considerable attention in conveying the message that we are all responsible to and dependent upon one another and as well to all life on this planet. It's an important message and one that bears repeating and re-enforcing. His manner, however, in this autobiography, tends toward sentimentality and self-importance. It's a long slog. Like a macrobiotic diet, it's good for you but not much fun.

David Suzuki has hosted some very fine "Nature of Things" tv shows on PBS. I have a dvd copy of one of his shows on "the Mystery of Mind." Suzuki combines the intelligence and dispassion of a good ecologist with an open-mindedness worthy of a philosophical journalist. His stories about his family -- especially his father and his environmentally active daughters -- are very heart-warming. He presents a scientifically valid yet spiritual view of the world in which we live.

This was an excellent review manual for the PE exam

This was an excellent review manual for the PE exam. I used only the review book along with the practice problem and quick reference companion to study for the test, and passed the exam on the first try. I also use this as a great reference manual at work as well.

Apparently they lowered the price by $100 since I wasted $225 on this book, they're probably going to be coming out with a new edition with a couple of numbers changed in the problems and a different cover so they can continue to gouge professionals. There are a lot of problems in this book and if you can solve them you'll probably do well on the PE. On the other hand, you'll do even better if you just get the (far less expensive) NCEES sample exam as those questions are far more similar to what you will actually see on the PE exam. FYI, I passed the chemical PE but didn't use this book at all. I just used the sample exam. I did however find the reference manual that accompanies this book to be pretty useful on the exam. What would make this book (and the reference manual) better would be more kinetics questions. Those account for a good percentage (maybe 6-10 problems out of 80) of questions you'll see on the test and yet you will hardly find anything in either book about those questions. Instead you find hundreds of useless pages covering subjects that you won't find on the exam. Why is that? Probably because these books are copy paste jobs from the other disciplines. The ChemE books are probably 80% the same as the MechE books with some environmental material inexplicably copied in probably from the Civil Engineering series.

Gives you more material to work with beyond the one practice test you can get from NCEES. The practice problems in this volume tend to be significantly harder than those in the test. I guess this is a good thing, since it over-prepares you.

About the Author
Jude Hassan was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and lives there to this day with his wife, Rachel. Jude published his memoir, Suburban Junky, following the loss of his dear friend to addiction. Along with his role as a speaker and mentor to those seeking help with substance abuse, Jude works at Bridgeway Behavioral Health in St. Louis assisting addicts as they begin the treatment process.

Just when you think someone's hit rock bottom...

This book is a gut wrenching page turner. Could not put it down. It of course speaks to YA readers who will no doubt relate to the difficulty of struggling to fit in and the pains of peer pressure, but also to the parents, friends, and victims of anyone who has faced addiction. I would consider using this book as a tool to reach reluctant readers and at risk students, or for anyone looking for something with a little edge-and a big old dose of harsh reality.

Stands out among books about addiction

I was particularly interested in this book because it is written by someone who lives in the area where I live and where the heroin epidemic has personally touched our family. It was extremely well-written, honest and hard to put down. I agree with other reviewers that say it should serve as a tool for teaching people about the dangers of drug use and especially how experimentation can easily lead to full blown addiction in no time. If Hasaan, who had a stable,loving family and even a drug-counselor Father, was not immune then surely no one is and we must all be vigilant in our efforts to stop young people from going down this dangerous path. I am very thankful that Hasaan has shared his story and is working to publicize the dangers of drug use. The only thing lacking in this book is more detail about his recovery journey. I felt a bit jolted when he suddenly jumped from his rock bottom moment to his romance with his wife. While he definitely showed that relapse is almost inevitable, I would like to hear more about his recovery after he was determined to never go down the path of drug use again. For those of us still waiting and hoping that our loved ones get to that point, it would be helpful to hear how he made it through to be where he is today. Thank you Jude Hasaan for writing this book. It is truly a gift to all of those touched by addiction and I believe it will help many people in their recoveries as well as prevent some from ever even considering drug use.
