This book has proven to be very useful. It is easy to read and while some of the discussion can be a little blunt, it is to the point and not beating around the bush. I have followed the concepts for about 4 weeks and already feel better with the progress of my workouts! I have sent the book to others as a gift.

A culinary turning point in my life.

I think that those who rated this book on the low side really didn't understand what it was all about.

Having had ramen-ya's in Osaka, I can understand the fanaticism surrounding this noodle. There is so much more to ramen than the instant packages you can get 10 for whatever...

For all home chefs, you remember the day you had your "AHA!" moment. I did with this cook book. His friend's comment on why no one was about to impart to Ivan the secrets of making ramen is that they only knew what they were taught and never actually THOUGHT about what made that bowl special or even contemplated on making something based on personal desire and taste.

I've always wanted to make ramen from scratch. And this book REALLY had me THINKING about what I really was contemplating on doing. Making my OWN signature bowl with the things I really LOVE about ramen all in one spot.

My whole outlook on home cuisine has changed dramatically.

I've been a biochemist for most of my adult life, only switching my focus on completely new pathways in the last five years. It's time to break out my bench notebook and start working on a new and exciting project, one I'll be working on for the rest of my unusual life.

Life is uncertain, as Ivan pointed out. Having been through some bad earthquakes myself and helping my friends dig their homes out after the Kobe Earthquake, well, a bowl of ramen really was more than a bowl of ramen back then. It's life-affirming.

So I really did get it. A lot more than I had anticipated, so I feel this book was worth every single cent and then some.

PS: Planning to host a Ivan Ramen Night. Will be parceling out each component out to fellow foodie friends, and for one night only, we'll assemble the whole shebang, and ACTUALLY be able to spend time eating and laughing rather than frantically rushing about the kitchen trying to get everything out... I'll let you know how it goes!

Okay, we all decided to make our yearly New Year's Eve party something to really remember. Tonight was our Ivan Ramen Night!!! Man, I would want to do this at least monthly! It was really great with the least painful way to put together this great bowl of noodles. I took photos. Won't be able to put them here like I would like it, because I go crazy on layout and photos. Can't do it here at Amazon... let's get back to the subject at hand.

Took us less than an hour before we started serving yummy ramen. I also had made some black garlic oil if you wanted it in your bowl. I have had it this way, and I loved it!! The noodles were stunning -- and I made these all by myself! So now I can do this as often as I want. And I do like making homemade pasta. It soaks up the flavors wonderfully. I was amazed on how great the broth was. I definitely want to make my own magick fish dust. I could use this in many recipes I make. The problem is that this is an expensive ingredient. But it is cool to have a grating box exactly like Iron Chef Morimoto.

I highly recommend that if you want to do "the ramen", parcel out the job to fellow foodies. Now that I know what this all tastes like, I can replicate this all by myself easily. It won't assemble itself. I'll give myself at least a week.

My only change? I love the pork in this recipe. It would cause a HUGE imbalance, but I'd rather have 2-3 slices. And I LOVE hard-boiled eggs. At least 2 here.

We decided to do something very different. It's like Evening at the Improv as we each described how we made in the most humorous way possible. I'm glad I digitaped this. It was hysterical!

So it's almost 23:00. We're all fat and sassy with too much ramen. However, I know what happens to ramen after you've even a huge bowl of it. You'll want something decadent and deep-fried. So we're having deep-fried cilantro shrimp rolls. I've also thawed out some really great honey-smoked salmon from Peninsula Seafoods. I've turned it into smoked salmon rangoon with a fine dipping chili sauce -- 1 part chili sauce and 1 part plum jelly. Yummy!

I do highly recommend putting together this meal of ramen with friends who love ramen, too.

This is not your college dorm room ramen!

A great read if you are a foodie, or even if your not! The human story is compelling, the explanation of the Japanese Ramen experience both instructive and mouth watering. and you develop a respect for an individual who was and is willing to take risks to live his dream. I bought this as a beach read but found I could not put it down. If the story is not enough, Orkin gives you recipes you can try for yourself. Thanks Ivan , I hope I can visit one of your restaurants to taste the real thing.

Fuel Your Ramen Obsession

Author Ivan Orkin's story of his path to ramen stardom is an interesting tale, even if ramen isn't your thing. More so since it's so unusual to hear of a foreigner breaking the almost impenetrable food world barrier in Japan, and ultimately being accepted enough by the populace to become a part of the ramen fabric there. This is not a cookbook, in the usual sense. There's lots of food information, but not for those interested in the quick and easy path to home ramen enjoyment. Mastering cooking technique is a matter of putting in a lot of time and effort. Orkin certainly did that, but I'm not sure most will be inspired by his tale to take up their own pursuit of the perfect noodle bowl. The recipes are there, but the process is laborious enough, so most will probably opt for something simpler. I think this is a good read for the food/ramen obsessed. Those wishing only to dip their fingers in the ramen broth, as it were, might want to look elsewhere.

A comprehensive, foundational reference text for psychiatry

[[VIDEOID:c0b1baf34ad62fa12ef92762978c1c98]]Synopsis of Psychiatry as long been the gold standard of psychiatric textbooks. Walk into most mental health clinician's offices and this sits on their book shelf. My alma mater used the 10th edition of this book throughout the entire program.

I recently developed a psychiatry program for a local university and was selecting the foundational textbook. I went about comparing this book with Black's (2014) Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, Sixth Edition, Hale's (2014) The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry, and Gabbard's (2014) Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders. While Black, Gabbard, & Hale all offer something unique, this book by far provides the most in-depth and comprehensive overview of the field of psychiatry. This book is also priced similarly or cheaper than the books noted above. In the end, I stuck with Synopsis of Psychiatry.

The downside to this book is that it is very heavy with 1400+ pages. The text is tiny and organized into two columns per page. Sometimes I find it difficult to follow the textual organization on each page. This is likely not a book you will read cover to cover. The only colored images are of different medication pills and brain imaging at the front of the book. The rest of the book is black, white, and pink. I should note, that the other books I mentioned above are also in grey scale and have far fewer images throughout the text.

Compared with the books mentioned above, Synopsis of Psychiatry provides more detailed historical information about each mental illness and a much more thorough discussion of child and adolescent psychiatry. This book, compared with others, also provides more information about theories of personality and psychopathology and it includes two chapters dedicated to the contributions of psychosocial sciences and sociocultural sciences.

For each mental disorder, this book does include the DSM 5 criteria, history, epidemiology, clinical features, associated symptoms, differential diagnosis, course, prognosis, and treatment options. On the other hand, Gabbard's text offers a much more detailed analysis of treatment options for each individual disorder.

In the end, this is an excellent foundational and reference textbook. It is bulky, heavy, and difficult to read the tiny text. The paperback version does come with a "free enhanced ebook." I would recommend using this or the Kindle version and reading the book on your tablet or computer. It lends to a much more comfortable reading experience.

Still one of the best psychiatry textbooks.

This text book has been a study companion and reference for me since my residency days. I used this book in conjunction with the K/S review questions book to prepare for board exams and use it frequently to read up on specific topics. The book is very comprehensive. I"m still exploring the new edition, thus far I especially appreciate the update on genetics and pharmacology, among others. The DSM-5 update of all chapters is helpful for review. Actually no need to buy the APA DSM-5 book separately, this book has all the diagnostic categories in tables and explanations of diagnostic criteria. Also has numerous cases. All in all, a very worthwhile purchase.

Addendum: The purchase includes e_book access. Tried the e_book on my android tablet and find that there is no highlighting function, no copy or print function, no note function,no good text to speech function etc. All it offers is basic book reading, nothing else. Needs more functions such as those mentioned to be fully useful. I understand that more functions are offered for iOS and windows platform, android needs work.

I really liked being able to download the e_book to my android tablet via the Inkling app from google play store. It was very easy to do and once downloaded, no internet connection is necessary for reading. I consider this feature a real plus, reminds me of kindle. The downside is that Inkling download/reading is limited to two devices, tough if you are a 'multi-devicer' .

Of course, the book is wonderful. I have had all previous editions and this is up to, or surpasses previous standards. This volume is very very heavy and the ereader option is a great plus. HOWEVER, I have found the Inkling.com website, where you register the book, very very poorly constructed and very hard to navigate. As far as I can tell so far, if you havet he book open on one device, you will not be able to open it on another. And I, as yet, have not been able to download it to my iPad. The website, for me is very user unfriendly and very frustrating. This is not a book you can bring with you on a subway commute.

En bonne forme is a fully integrated Intermediate French program, based on the conviction that a solid knowledge of French grammar is essential for solid acquisition of the language. Although the core of each chapter is the grammar section, students are given ample opportunity throughout to improve all four skills--reading, writing, listening, and speaking. All of the grammar explanations and exercise directions are given in French to encourage greater acquisition of the language. Reading selections, carefully chosen to illustrate the grammar structures presented in each chapter, are immediately reinforced with exercises.

About the Author
Simone Renaud was born in France, raised in Morocco (North Africa), and studied for seven years in the Sorbonne where her degrees (Licence de lettres classiques, CAPES de Lettres Modernes, Diplome de professeur de franAais A l'A(c)tranger) prepared her for teaching French abroad. Her teaching experience includes teaching French in Geneva (Switzerland) for Smith College and teaching all levels, from beginners to Master Degree classes and assistants programs, at the University of Oregon in Eugene and at San Jose State University. She created and ran for many years the Alliance FranAaise of Santa Cruz, CA, where she is retired. In addition, Professor Renaud has authored many successful French textbooks.

Dr. Dominique van Hooff is a French native who specialized in French modern literature both in France and in the US. She currently chairs the Foreign Language Department at San Jose State University. She has taught all levels of classes in French from elementary to graduate at several universities. An active and well-known scholar in her field, she has authored many articles and books (3 textbooks) and has made numerous presentations both on scholarly literary subjects and methods of teaching French throughout the world. Professor van Hooff served as President of the AATF for Northern California for 9 years. She is a Knight in the order of the French Academic Palms.

Excellent French grammar

My semi-private class of three students and our wonderful teacher have been working through this book for about a year and I find it extremely comprehensive, although sometimes I gloss over the minutia thinking I'll never have to use that. So far I can't think of a single point of French grammar that is overlooked. It's written in French too. Best for someone who has already learned some of the basics.

This was the worst book that I have ever had for a 101 course due to the layout of this book (no highlighted text, etc). To be fair, my opinion is bias because of the difficulty of the Music Therapy class that I attended.

My first (and probably only) music therapy course used this book as it's text. I am a musician, so I'm coming from that perspective. However, there is surprisingly little information on here as far as music skills. The assumption is that those skills are developed outside of this particular class.

The author gets into the specifics of a wide range of disabilities, disorders and conditions. The way the brain processed music is presented in a thorough, yet (relatively) simplistic way. It's a detailed study, and not just a bunch of fun facts, so you have to be ready to take the time to research.

The questions at the end of the chapters provided an excellent review for each class, and the book was well organized. I would certainly recommend both the book, as well as a Music Therapy class to anyone with any interest.

This book is good for reviewing and studying for the music therapy exam after you've finished your program. I skimmed most of it, and passed the exam with flying colors. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to solidly prepare for the CBMT exam.

One of the great poets of the twentieth century

Wystan Hugh (W. H.) Auden is rightly regarded as one of the great poets of the twentieth century. He is one of my favorites because of his great skill with language, his ability to talk about everyday life in wonderfully insightful ways, and to sing while he helps us see what he sees. His even greater gift is to make his words feel as if they came from out of our own mind and heart. We want to possess them.

Yet, he was also a very learned man, but his learning always has a point about life rather than allowing him to step into a spotlight for our adulation. You can flip to any page of this volume and find something to wonder at. Even the plainest poems have depths to plumb and the seemingly obscure yield to patient reading.

While Auden has a somewhat complicated biography, it would be a mistake to get sidetracked in too many details. While knowing the life of an artist often aids our understanding of his work, it is also a mistake to see too many parallels in his work with the happenstance of his life. Great artists draw on their lives, but they also transcend them.

I am very grateful to have this volume in my library.

Don't believe the old man.

Auden is my favorite "modern" English poet (I hate TS Eliot and his fascist friend Pound, for their politics and posturing). I've loved Auden since my college days in the late 40's.(Yes. 1940's.) In those days the poems started with "Musee des Beaux Arts," included "Law Like Love" and "In Memory of W.B. Yeats." The songs started with "As I walked Out One Evening."
A fine clear voice, very even expressions, and sentiments that one could easily subscibe to. I tried to write like that (and in part succeeded). The copy in my library is dated 1945.
Recently I decided to share my love of Auden's poetry and ordered three copies of the book descibed in this listing. What a mistake! It appears that Auden after about 1940, and until the end of his apparently miserable life, changed his style and everything else about himself, AND rewrote, deleted and butchered his early work. What a sad revelation. Don't believe the old man.

I do a lot of management training each year for the Circle K Corporation, a national chain of convenience stores. Among the topics we address in our seminars is the retention of quality employees—a real challenge to managers when you consider the pay scale in the service industry. During these discussions, I ask the participants, 'What has caused you to stay long enough to become a manager?' Some time back a new manager took the question and slowly, with her voice almost breaking, said, 'It was a $19 baseball glove.'

Cynthia told the group that she originally took a Circle K clerk job as an interim position while she looked for something better. On her second or third day behind the counter, she received a phone call from her nine-year-old son, Jessie. He needed a baseball glove for Little League. She explained that as a single mother, money was very tight, and her first check would have to go for paying bills. Perhaps she could buy his baseball glove with her second or third check.
When Cynthia arrived for work the next morning, Patricia, the store manager, asked her to come to the small room in back of the store that served as an office. Cynthia wondered if she had done something wrong or left some part of her job incomplete from the day before. She was concerned and confused.

Patricia handed her a box. 'I overheard you talking to your son yesterday,' she said, 'and I know that it is hard to explain things to kids. This is a baseball glove for Jessie because he may not understand how important he is, even though you have to pay bills before you can buy gloves. You know we can't pay good people like you as much as we would like to; but we do care, and I want you to know you are important to us.'

The thoughtfulness, empathy and love of this convenience store manager demonstrates vividly that people remember more how much an employer cares than how much the employer pays. An important lesson for the price of a Little League baseball glove.

Throughout my career in sales, I've wondered about difficult customers. What makes them so mean? How can they be so unkind? How can a perfectly rational person suddenly lose all sense of human decency?

One day, I had an insight into their thinking. It happened while visiting my husband's music store. He was working with a customer and we were short-handed. So I did what every good wife would do: I tried to wait on customers.

'I'm looking for music,' said a gnarled man, a soiled John Deere cap pulled down tightly over his thinning gray hair. 'The name of the song is . . .' and he uncrumpled a grimy sheet of mimeographed paper from his jeans pocket, ''Stairway to Heaven.' Do you have it?'

I stepped to the wall displays of sheet music and scanned for the name. On a good day, the music filled slots in alphabetical order. On this day, the alphabet skipped around. I searched for several minutes, conscious of his growing restlessness.

'No, I'm sorry but it doesn't look like it's here.'
His back arched and his watery blue eyes narrowed. Almost imperceptibly, his wife touched his sleeve as if to draw him back. His narrow mouth twisted in anger.
'Well, ain't that just grand. You call yourself a music store? What kind of a store doesn't have music like that? All the kids know that song!' he spluttered.
'Yes, but we don't carry every piece of music ever . . .'

'Oh, easy for you! Easy to give excuses!' Now his wife was pawing at his sleeve, murmuring, trying to calm him the way a groom talks to a horse gone wild.
He leaned in to me, pointing a knotty finger at my face. 'I guess you wouldn't understand, would you? You don't care about my boy dying! About him smashing up his Camaro into that old tree. About them playing his favorite song at his funeral, and he's dead! He's gone! Only 18 and he's gone!'

The paper he waved at me came into focus. It was the program for a memorial service.
'I guess you wouldn't understand,' he mumbled. He bent his head. His wife put her arm around him and stood quietly by his side.
'I can't understand your loss,' I said quietly, 'but we buried my four-year-old nephew last month, and I know how bad that hurts.'
He looked up at me. The anger slid from his face, and he sighed. 'It's a shame, ain't it? A dirty shame.' We stood in silence for a long moment. Then he fished around in his back pocket and pulled out a worn billfold. 'Would you like to see a picture of our boy?'

Start your day right with some encouraging words and thought

I think that all of us at some time or another felt like staying in bed or staying away from our work place. We still showed up under obligation. I think if you read some of the stories and thoughts in this book it will make your day go just a bit easier. Why not start the day with some encouragement and a smile? Afterall, we all do better work when we actually care about what we are doing. I think that this book reminds us not to lose site of why we are doing what we are doing.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

I love this book very much. I guess you could call it my favorite one. I am 14 years old and deal with a lot of hard things and your books really help me. I have heard stories from it at camps, at school, and at church. Sometimes when something is bothering me I look in there to see if anyone else has this problem and i can see how they handled it. Your book has really helped me through my teens eventhough I am just becoming one. I would recomend that yall get more publicity for your books so that other people can find them and get help like I did. A moving and uplifting book that gets you hooked!

This is an excellent book for the workplace. It is nice and refreshing to read if you are feeling down about work. I've begun to retell the stories at my workplace and everyone loves the stories. This is great reading for a coffee break.

About the Author
Dave Gingery was born in Ironwood, Michigan and in the early 1950s moved to Merrill, Wisconsin where he began a career in the sheet metal trade. In the early 1960s he moved to the Missouri Ozarks where he continued working for several years as a model builder and product design engineer in the sheet metal manufacturing industry. Over the years Dave has authored a number of books on the subjects of metal casting and machine tool design.

A great book for the novice

I got this book hoping that I could learn to make metal enclosures for electronic projects. I was not disappointed. This book is very easy to understand and the clear illustrations guide you in the whole process of creating the projects depicted on the book. Although I am still in the process of making the leaf brake I am itching to start working on the three drawer tool chest. I recommend this book to anyone that loves to work with their hands. The author is very encouraging without being condescending.

A classic workshop author

I purchased this book to learn more about designing projects with sheet metal. I expeceted a lot from this book, since Gingery is a well-known author of topics in the workshop. I was not disappointed.

This book covers a few sheet metal projects. It discusses the basic design process in detail, from the perspective of someone building sheet metal objects for production and sale.

The book includes several sheet metal projects, including the too box on the cover. The drawings and description of the projects are enough to easily be able to complete them yourself.

I recommend this book, to anyone who wants to learn to turn flat sheet metal into useful projects.

Excellent for the Novice and Entertaining for the skilled

Bought this book originally to act as an aid in teaching my teenage sons about the industry of Sheetmetal which I have been a part of for over 18 years as a HVAC installer and repairman. Found the book to be very informative, well written and very entertaining. The project examples are excellent, and they walk you through a project from start to finish. They even give you a project of building your own sheet metal brake out of wood which would be great for any beginner or casual user. Looking forward to purchasing another David Gingery book on designing and building a sheet metal brake.
