About the Author

Bruce Joyce grew up in New Jersey, was educated at Brown University and, after military service, taught in the schools of Delaware. He was a professor at the University of Delaware, the University of Chicago, and Teachers College, Columbia University. In all those settings, he directed the teacher education programs and, at Teachers College, the Agnes Russell School – the laboratory school of the college. His scholarship and practice have centered on teaching, teacher education, professional development, and school improvement. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Hong Kong, the University of Toronto, the Western Australia Institute of Technology; and he has been an all-India Fulbright Scholar and a USAID general technical assistant to Egypt's Ministry of Education. His technical services to American, Asian, and European schools are focused on models of teaching, professional development, and school improvement.

 

Emily Calhoun has a B.A. in English from Georgia College in Milledgeville, and M.Ed. in early childhood education and reading from Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, and an Ed.D. from the University of Georgia in Athens. Emily has taught at the elementary, secondary, and university levels. She has worked as a consultant with intermediate service agencies, as a coordinator of the Georgia League of Professional Schools at the University of Georgia, and as a K-12 Language Arts coordinator within a school district. Since 1991, she has been director of The Phoenix Alliance in Saint Simons Island. In that position, she has partnered with districts, states, and provinces in extensive professional development and school improvement projects. These have generated considerable positive effects for teachers, administrators, and students and have included research on school improvement, especially on action research, and the teaching of reading and writing. Her international work includes professional development and/or visiting scholar positions in Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland, Columbia, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

Review of Models of Teaching.

I have been a practicing teacher in the field for 20 years. I am a graduate of a Big 10 University, with a double major and outside field in education. This book is the best resource I have ever seen for the college student wishing to become a teacher, or for the practicing teacher who was stiffed in methods classes. This book explains in detail the way to use the various models of instruction and how to construct them. It is very explicit in giving anyone the information necessary to become a master teacher. I feel extremely fortunate, even at this point in my career, to have had the exposure to this book that I have. It has allowed me to focus the methods I have been using, and given me the confidence to attempt models that I have not used or even heard of. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in becoming an instructor of any kind, as this book will help everyone, K-graduate school.

A excellent resource tool!

I have read many books on the theory of instruction, but find this book one of the most useful. Balancing theory and practice with actual case studies that help readers to realize the value of the individual models, this text is hardly what some may fear as the standard, dry text that they encounter in a models of instruction course. I highly recommend this well-written text to both pre-service and veteran teachers who want to examine instruction more closely.

A Graduate Education Student's Review

After utilizing this book as the required textbook for the graduate level 'Models of Teaching' course at the University of Memphis, I can honestly say that, throughout my pursuit of a Master's Degree in Education, this has to be one of the worst texts I have ever had to suffer. I found it to be poorly written, badly formatted, and terribly confusing in its organization. Even my instructor -- who holds a doctorate in education and is a highly-regarded professional consultant in the field of adult education -- is still unsure exactly how many so-called 'models' were introduced by this unforgiveably overpriced excuse for a text! Thank heaven my classmates and I could rely on good lectures and excellent group learning activities. Leave this one on the shelf!! Better yet, tell Joyce, Weil and Calhoun to head back to English class and then re-focus their efforts on creating a teaching tool that will serve to help the student rather than frustrate him.

About the Author
Gertrud Aub-Buscher taught French at the University of the West Indies, and directed the language centre of the University of Hull. Now retired, she is continuing to do research on French-lexifer Creoles and French language policy in the West Indies. Beverley Ormerod Noakes is an associate professor of French at the University of Western Australia and a specialist in the teaching of Francophone literature. She is the author of An Introduction to the French Caribbean Novel and co-author of a book on women writers from Francophone Africa.

About the Author

Warren Gay has been an electronics enthusiast since childhood and often dragged discarded TV sets home after school. In high school he learned to program the IBM-1130 and then pursued a career in software development at Ryerson Polytechnical, in Toronto. Since then he has worked professionally for over 30 years, mainly in C/C++, under Unix and Linux.

Meanwhile, the love of electronics has never faded since the early creation of his home-brewed Intel 8008 system in the 70's to the present day projects employing the Raspberry Pi. Warren also holds an advanced amateur radio license and was able to work the Mir space station (U2MIR) using packet radio in August 1991.

He's authored other books including Mastering Raspberry Pi for Apress, Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours, Linux Socket Programming by Example, and Advanced Unix Programming.

Hot off the press, hardware coding oriented, fast overview, worth having for RasPi C++

This is a preliminary review. Because the book was just published and had no purchaser reviews, when I got my copy this morning I thought I would make the effort to get this up. But you should know that I have not tested the accuracy of the information against actual code running on the RasPi hardware. Still, I thought it would be useful to give potential buyers some sense of the book, even if it is based only on a quick reading of the text. I will revise the review with any problems I find, and I may adjust the star rating up or down with time, but in the meantime, at least there will be something here besides the publisher's official spiel ; ) .

The first thing you need to know about this book is that it is in no way a substantial C++ primer. If you don't already know C++, you are going to have to use some other resource to learn it. There is more "primer" material on electronics hardware than on C++ (there is a little), and once you understand the role the book is attempting to fill, this isn't so bad. Besides, I suspect the author figures programmers need more help with hardware than with coding.

There was one topic in the book I found a little off topic, and that was the section on PiSpy. It wasn't a negative, I just didn't see it as all that relevant to C++ and the RasPi. Perhaps in time I will see the connection, but so far it seems a little tangential.

The book gives you a good deal of the information you will need in order to use C++ and the Raspberry Pi together, including an overview of key RasPi hardware oriented C++ classes. The first half of this book is an orientation for the hardware, the second half is more software oriented, with the assumption that C++ on the Pi is going to be largely about talking to the hardware. Again, if you want to know about C++ application development in the sense of working with data, networking protocols, guis, and so on, you are going to want some additional resources to draw on. If you want to know about coding to manage things like switch bounce, then you will be good to go.

I recognize that the book is something of a survey/intro text, and is slightly less than 200 pages, but I would have liked to see more depth, more sample code, and more examples. I'm not saying that these things aren't there, but if this is your first stab at this kind of development, you'll want to put on a big pot of coffee before you start. If you have basic knowledge of C++, and if you have some knowledge of hardware and embedded development then this publication should allow you to get a quick toehold and start you on your way. But it is the beginning of your journey, not the middle or the end.

In conclusion, if you want to code for the RasPi with C++, you should probably have this book. At the moment the book doesn't have a lot of competition, and it certainly contains worthwhile information. Sadly, the price reflects its niche position.

Best yet

The style of this book surpasses anything that Mr. Bradshaw has written. In other words, although his other books are nice, his writing style is not fluent. He must have had help perhaps, but this one flows fluently. The quality of the material is earth shattering. Very few books have I read from cover to cover within a week and this one I did. This is something I can go over and over.

Creating the love you want

I have not read all of this but what I have read is very helpful about understanding dynamics of why we continue to live our lives in the past, though we may not know it. He is coming from a place of exposing the shame element and people who come from or understand the 12 step programs will recognize his way of demystifying pain and shame. He is a gentle caring soul who really wants us to understand and reveal ourselves TO ourselves and then be able to move on.

John Bradshaw's literature has been a real help to me. I enjoy his theories and his style of writing. He doesn't overload you with concepts, but really breaks things down and keeps them simple. I recommend this book to anyone, no matter your situation...it will help.

A pretty good reference guide

Overall I found this book to be pretty good. There a several detailed maps in the book and plenty of details regarding both story quests and side quests. There are just two things I disliked about the book. First, in the weapons section there are certain weapons whose drop location is listed as "confidential". For a comprehensive, all-in-one reference guide to omit details on some objects is really unacceptable. Those weapons can easily be looked up on any fan website for the details, so it's truly no secret where to find those items. The second thing I dislike the about book is probably unfair. The book does not cover the newest downloadable content for Borderlands 2, despite the fact that it was available a couple of months before the book's publishing. Therefore, for those of you wanting detailed information about overpower levels and Digistruct Peak, you are out of luck. It's my understanding that this content is not included in the Game of the Year edition of the game, therefore it makes sense that it wouldn't be in the Game of the Year edition of the guide. Nevertheless it's a disappointment that this book does not cover in detail everything having to do with Borderlands 2.

Promised a lot, gives a lot, but not for everyone...read on.

I was super excited to see the game of the year edition come out in print. I have the digital version of the first guide (without the dlc content) which is too hard to sift through online. You can't display a whole page on a widescreen monitor, and you cannot scale the text to make it bigger/smaller! (That's my gripe). Anyway, they did a super job adding all the dlc that was available at the time of print date, so it's missing the headhunter missions.

What's great: pages are vivid, lots of content galore, missions divided into sections, lists legendary and seraph items!

What's not so great: pages are kinda thin and could tear very easily.

The maps are vital to explore all the goodies but this version puts the key to all the items at the beginning of all maps and doesn't put it on each page the map is on like the first version?? WTF? I paid for page flipping to see what the heck that little symbol is on the map. Grr!
Some legendary item descriptions are described as "classified" and stats aren't shown. Hold up just a sec, that's what I bought the book for, to see how bad/good my orange weapon is and if there is a better version. Nope...that's classified.

Overall a great and handy companion for first time players to go along with the Game of the Year edition of the game. But master players should avoid this version like the plague. If you need it that bad, buy it used.

Not the best game guide in the world, but pretty close

For such a great guide, I was surprised to find it missing a couple of things. First off, it doesn't have an index, which all informational books should have regardless of size. At least there's not a huge amount of cross-information that can be found in multiple areas of the guide, so it's fairly easy to find things via assumption and the table of contents, but still. Secondly, I was really expecting it to have a map-poster. No, really, last time I checked, every guide for every game ever had a poster with it, and I'd absolutely put a map of Pandora up on my wall. :( Oh well. Also I got blasted in the face with ink smell when I first opened it, but that's to be expected, it's a gorgeous guide.

It does have some places where the layout/info flow could be a little more intuitive, but clearly this was intuitive to someone. I spend a lot of time flipping back and forth to find the info on side quests for an area, because the info isn't always in close proximity to the area map where the quest takes place.

Overall, it's a really fantastic guide that every fan of the game should have. I especially appreciate the pictures of all the heads for all the classes, and the in-depth gun info that had several things I wasn't aware of. Get this guide!

Excellent Reference

I needed a reference guide for Quicken 2004. After purchasing the Dummies version, this book is by far the better text. It provides clear, concise information with screen shots for all aspects of Quicken 2004 including items you may not know about. (Records Organizer Household Organizer!) Those were not mentioned in the other text. She gives suggestions for how to set up your files the way that you want. I highly recommend this book whether you are an expert or just beginning. It is well worth the price!
