Heart Breaking And Heart Warming All At Once! A Must Read!

Well, what a heart warming emotional roller coaster of a ride this read was. Tori the poor little thing is considered the runt if the litter, being born prematurely she has always been considered more delicate than the other members of her pack and is often sheltered from being allowed the same freedom as the other pack members because of her considered frailty. Then there is Jack her pole opposite, he is as strong as any wolf could be and is also the the future Beta of the pack no less. But he never handles her with kid gloves, well he does in the fact he never puts her at risk, and worries for her but he also sees a strength in her, and when he knows she is his fated mate he tries to help her to fight against her inevitable fate that all think will befall her on her transition. The bond growing between these two was beautiful to read, there was flirtatiousness, humour, but also the pain that they were each suffering as well as the feelings that they were having towards one another and trying to concern themselves with by focussing purely on Tori's transition as well as handle other pressures and the worry of the rest of the pack the nearer Tori's transition approached. This tale of keeping strong for your beloved, never giving up and exhausting every possible option was thoughtfully and skillfully written. So much so that you felt the anxiety as the time ran away from them, the love and bond grow between them as a couple but also the bond between the pack that was there for each other and the support. I was surprised by the reaction of Tori's parents towards the end of the story but that is just my opinion and I wont give spoilers. I am thrilled that this is a book that I have read and would highly recommend it to you to be one that you add to your collection. I really hope that you enjoy this book as much as I did! No Sex Required

Right off the bat you know it's going to be the end of the book before you get any sex. She's 16 and he's 18/19. In addition to that, for her safety he knows he can't act on the attraction he feels for her.

To summarize - Tori is the runt of the litter. That she made it this long is a miracle. An unfortunate accident out her life in danger and her parents sent her from the pack. Three years later she is back and 16, two years away from the shift that could end her life. Seconds in her presence he realizes she is his mate. In order to help her get stronger so she can survive the shift he begins to train her. She thinks he is doing it because he's a beta-in-training. He can't let her know the truth or it will distract her.!

So while there is no sex to speak of until the end of the book it is still a fantastic book. That is due to the characters and the emotion the draw out in you.

There is an author out there who writes in a series that is in the BDSM genre. Her books are pricey, very long, and don't come out but once a year. Maybe twice finished writes a novella. She has made comments suggesting that authors who write shorter books are not real writers. Recently she publicly blasted a fan who gave her latest book a 1 Star rating (which I did too) for (among other things) writing a BDSM book with little to no BDSM in it. Or sex, for that matter. She said in essence that the fan obviously only liked short books with lots of sex, alluding to not only a poor character but small brain. Shame on her - first of all.

This book shows you can write a short book (compared to her 11200 location count book) with very little sex and still get a 5 Star rating.

Jack and Tori's story is awesome!

This book starts out with Jack and Tori jumping in a lake. Things take a turn and Tori's parents send her away so she won't get hurt or hurt herself accidentally anymore. Tori's uncle trains Tori to help her be strong to make it through the transition. Tori comes home for a visit and Jack realizes that she is his mate. Tori is clueless, but knows that Jack has always been nice to her. Jack ends up going back with Tori to help with her training cause he doesn't want to lose his mate. Jack knows that Tori is underage and he won't do anything until after she comes of age and goes through the transition. This is a really good story about love and how Jack will do anything to save his mate including getting banished from his pack. I'm glad that Jack and Tori got to tell their story.

A Great book for Datsun lovers!

How To Modify Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine was recommended to me when I my husband and I bought my 1968 510 Datsun SCCA race car. The instructions for performing various disassembly/assembly tasks are clear, with a complete parts break-out for every task covered.

This is the only Datsun modification book we own, and I can't imagine needing any other one.

Solid Flask Guide For Experienced Users

This is a nice book for taking your Flask programming to the next level. It is meant for a programmer who is already working with Flask as it does not cover much introductory information.

I am working with Flask currently and there were a couple examples in the early chapters that helped me a lot. The explanations are generally pretty clear, but in some cases the author assumes the reader knows a lot.

One thing that annoyed me was the author mentioned this was the most comprehensive and best Flask book available. There's a couple other Flask books out there I have not checked out yet, but I'd prefer an author to acknowledge others in the field rather than assuming their book is hands down the best.

Some of the chapters felt a bit out of order to me. The goal of the book is to create a blogging platform with Flask but the 2nd chapter goes very deep into creating Models with SQLAlchemy. A lot of the chapters just felt in random order, and I would have liked to seen a more ground up approach to building the blogging platform.

Overall this is a good book for learning Flask. There is a lot of relevant information and you cannot go wrong buying this book if you want to improve your skills with Flask.

Taking the next step with Flask Web Development

Mastering Flask covers all the topics needed to a create web site using Flask Web Framework. However, knowledge of the in and outs of web development is required.

The reader will need to know how to join the topics presented in the book to build a functional application. The source code provided by the author should help.The reader should have some experience beforehand in building an application using the Flask web framework or some other framework. Also, the explanation of some of the topics are not covered in depths.

The books covers advance topics, like NoSQL using MongoDB and Celery. These advances topics are not required to build a Web Application, but are essential to build modern web application that requires high performance and scalability.

The Secure Your App, NoSQL and Celery topics makes the book a worth while investment.

There is more than enough information in this book to the get you started using the Flask Web Framework, but it should not be only your reference.

Review of Mastering Flask

This is a book for Python programmers that want to include Flask in their applications. It covers everything from start to finish. The start it shows how to obtain and install Flask and at the end it tells how to deploy the application on your own server, on Heroku and on Amazon web services. In between it tells about databases, explaining the difference between RDBMS and NoSQL databases and which should be used depending on the application. It talks about SQLAlchemy, which is used for connecting to the database. It also presents information on using Jinja to create the user views. It lists a few of the more popular Flask extensions and how to create your own.

All in all I would recommend this book.

MY TOP 5 ASYLUMS By Madeleine Roux

While writing ASYLUM, I turned to some of the following hospitals and institutions for inspiration, to bring in that real world touch. Some of the stories and histories I stumbled across were almost too intense and gruesome to be believed.

I. Norwich State Hospital for the Insane

Preston, Connecticut 1904 ― 1996

When most people think of an asylum, they probably picture a giant looming mansion that looks something like Norwich State Hospital for the Insane. It has one of those iconic, red brick exteriors with columns and a steep roof. The hospital is also notable for its maze of underground passageways. It’s considered by creep and ghost aficionados to be extremely haunted. Several shows have featured the hospital, including the popular series Ghost Hunters.

II. Whittingham Asylum

Lancashire, England 1869 ― 1995

Whittingham Asylum, charming and even quaint on the outside, makes the list if only for its sheer size. Whittingham was virtually a miniature city, and its expansive grounds included a brewery, post office, and even its own brass band. It was also the sight of some seriously scary allegations, with an inquiry in the 1960s that included reports of cruelty and fraud, complaints that were kept quiet with threats. Reportedly, some wards were infested with vermin, while others were left freezing cold. There were even rumors of a “wet towel treatment” involving a cold, wet towel wrapped around the patient’s neck until they passed out.

III. Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Louisville, Kentucky 1910 ― 1962

The architecturally stunning Waverly Hills was built to house a sudden influx of tuberculosis patients in the county, but closed after only fifty years when medical advances rendered the facility obsolete. Considered to be one of the most haunted hospitals in the eastern United States, it has played host to scores of reality TV shows about the paranormal, including Scariest Places on Earth and Ghost Hunters. It gets creepier―there are currently plans to renovate the hospital into a hotel for those looking to have a spooky spot to stay.

V. Topeka State Hospital

Topeka, Kansas 1872 ― 1997

Topeka State Hospital may look cute and charming on the outside, but on the inside it was home to some unbelievably dark rumors. By far the creepiest allegations leveled against the hospital? (Brace yourself, it’s pretty gross.) There are stories of patients strapped down for so long that their skin began to grow around the straps. Yeesh. Nowadays, you can sometimes hear music playing from inside the abandoned hospital and spot shadows peering out at the windows.

HB: The imagery was so vivid in ASYLUM and the photographs throughout were just gorgeous―was it based on anywhere you’ve visited personally?

MR: The admittedly limited travel I’ve done in Europe included some incredible ruins and castles. There’s a feeling you get in those places, a sort of wonder and terror that you just don’t feel in new buildings. I tried to draw on those memories for Brookline. I also grew up in an old Victorian farmhouse, and . . . I don’t want to say it’s haunted but there were certainly times it felt haunted. To this day, when I visit my parents, I feel eyes on me at night in the hallway. The hairs on the back of your neck go up and you can sense there’s history there present with you. I wanted that same feeling to come through with Brookline.

HB: I felt really connected to Dan Crawford, your main character. What part of your fabulous mind did he come from?

MR: I was kind of a weird kid. I loved school. I wasn’t so much a loner as a gigantic nerd, always with my nose in a book or writing my own scripts and stories. There’s a good bit of my own insecurities and childhood memories in Dan; that same geek pride mixed with a constant fear that maybe life would be easier if I veered more toward the mainstream. Writing a male perspective is intimidating in the sense that I wanted it to feel authentic, so I would stop every once in a while and ask a friend if it was reading correctly to them. Having honest buddies helped, it always does for writing. They weren’t shy about saying, “I’m sorry but no guy would do/think/act that way, try again.”

HB: Has horror always appealed to you? If not, why now, why this story? If so . . . well . . . same question.

MR: The first two novels I did had a certain creep factor, too, since they were about zombies and survival. The irony here is that I’m a huge wuss when it comes to scary movies. I spent most of Cabin In the Woods whimpering in someone else’s lap. I’m not good with scary movies or gore or anything like that, but I find myself drawn to that kind of story again and again. It’s like I know it’s going to keep me up all night but I can’t help myself. I think that’s probably common, though . . . . We all test ourselves now and again, see where our boundaries and limits are. I get a kick out of pushing those limits for myself and exploring the darker parts of my imagination. My life isn’t all that adventurous, so writing darker stories gives me a chance to indulge in the more morbid thoughts that cross my mind.

HB: I know you probably get asked this a lot, but what’s your favorite piece of writing advice for the writers out there?

MR: It comes from Neil Gaiman and is infuriatingly straightforward and simple. “How do you do it? You do it. You write. You finish what you write.” And it’s true. As I’m sure you know, there’s no magic button. Sometimes you can’t write a sentence and other times you can’t stop, but just sitting down and making yourself do it is the key. You have to practice. You have to do the work, over and over. He also has another great piece of advice somewhere (I’m an unabashed Neil fangirl, I can’t help it) about getting out and living life, and not feeling upset or pressured if you don’t have a huge well of experience to draw on. The best inspiration comes from falling in love, falling out of it, getting your heart broken, just being present and showing up, you know? You won’t have anything to draw from if you guard yourself too closely. You have to risk life changing you in order to have something there to write about.

HB: What’s next from the shadowed mind of Madeleine Roux? What are you working on, and when can I have it? :)

MR: I’m notorious for starting new projects and then abandoning them, but I’ve had a gritty YA fantasy series cooking in my head for a while now. I’ve been taking down tons of notes for it and I’ve even started a few chapters, so right now I hope that has wings and takes off. You can have it the second I manage to get it all down!

Dan starts receiving ominous notes, and he is plagued by nightmares in which he sees Brookline as if he were really there, all those years ago. When people start dying, Dan is convinced that the killer's identity is buried in his dorm's darkest history and that his own strange connection to the institution may be the key to stopping the murders. Eerie black-and-white pictures throughout the book add to the creep factor of this story, but unfortunately many images are redundant photographs of Dan's notes, while others seem unrelated to the text. The plot drives forward too quickly, with some circumstances and events feeling forced. Dan meets Abby and Jordan on his first day, for instance, and within hours they carry on with the rapport of lifelong friends. Creepy Campus Thriller

I had heard wonderful things about this book and I was very impressed with Asylum from the very beginning. It is a dark, creepy and dramatic book about a young man who lives in a renovated mental hospital and finds that after mysterious circumstances that his dorm has developed a life of its own. Dan Crawford is a typical teenager who spends too much time involved in his studies of science and history but jumps at the opportunity to experience college life at the prestigious New Hampshire College prep program for the summer. He finds that the school was just what he was looking for and immediately starts to make friends with fellow students, Abby and Jordan. One night, they decide to investigate the abandoned basement of their dorm that used to be Brookline's main office and holds case files of the asylum's infamous residents. After their midnight excursion, strange things start to happen with no logical explanation and Dan finds that some secrets should have stayed locked away in Brookline's abandoned rooms.

Madeleine Roux's Asylum is a haunting novel that provides a thrilling mystery and creepy locales that will keep you up at night. The pictures that are laced throughout the novel are a perfect addition to the story and will make the reader feel as though they are there with Dan and had me jumping at every noise that I heard. Asylum is a well-written novel that I know people will enjoy and is now one of my top books for 2013. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Roux but it will be awhile before I sleep without the light on.

Review of Asylum

I am a pansy when it comes to scary stories. I will readily admit that. The book can be even not well written and I'll still be pansy. Add pictures into the mix and yeah, I'll be sleeping with my light on for at least 2-3 nights after finishing the book (and sometimes during if I just can't finish the book in one setting). Asylum was one of those books - I was so tired and haunted by the images in the book that it was a two night read for me...and the result was I spent a few nights restless in my sleep due to having to have my light on.

I don't know about you, but the idea of an old mental asylum is only second to an abandoned carnival ground on a terror-ranking list. When I was in my late teens, I accompanied a boyfriend and my sister to an abandoned penitentiary in eastern Wyoming. It was Halloween and the workers had a blast filling each room with re-enactments of terrible things that may have happened. Asylum provoked the memory of that experience through the medium of the included photos. Not to mention - anytime I see a picture with eyes scratched out on it I get massive heebie-jeebies.

That's not to say that Roux wrote a story that could have creeped me out. In fact, without the addition of the pictures, I think I might have been a bit bored by the story. It was a pretty typical one - group of kids get locked up, essentially, in a creepy old building and start investigating its history. I got some massive Scooby Doo vibes from it. But Roux did take it a step darker, which was necessary, with the inclusion of the photos. The photos (and their credits are included at the back of the book) are a story in themselves. So much horror contained in each, it is worth picking up the book just to examine them.

I don't know of many kids that could handle the level of creepy that Asylum boasted - the photos might just have been a little over the top. But I leave that judgment up to the parents. For me, those photos were enough and I won't be able to get through a night in the near future without having that one little thought in the back of my mind that something might just happen once I click my light off for the night.

Characters good, plot good, setting good, yet somehow Asylum feels like it was written for a young adult audience. It starts out strong, but ends up quite like a Nancy Drew mystery. I was somewhat disappointed.

I want to give it a perfect rating but I can't

Make no mistake, this book is an excellent compendium to the Ghostbusters universe. It is a treasure trove of information. Initially, when I pre-ordered, I was under the assumption it would cover primarily the first movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have yet to sit down and read it (it's over 200 pages and hard bound) but here is what you can expect

1. Foreward by Dan Akroyd/Introduction by Ivan Reitman.
2. Complete overview of the original (original sketches/concept art of the baddies, storyboards, film shots you've never seen before, matte paintings, Ecto 1 illustrations., creature costumes and makeup, movie posters
3. Complete overview of the sequel (more of what you would expect in part except a lot more story book art and schematics).
3. Overview of the Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, Ghostbuster Video Games, Ghostbuster Comics, Ghostbuster Merchandise

This is enough to make any hard core fan happy.

So what ruined this from being a 5 star rating from me: The extras.

Scattered throughout the book are film cells, business cards, sketches and artwork, storyboards, etc..

They are a welcome addition, but instead of including it in its own separate section, they are glued to the pages. The glue mostly comes off but it leaves an oily residue on the pages where it originally resided. I guess as a trade off you could not remove it, but then it's obstructing you from reading what's underneath it. I hope if they ever come out with a second printing they address is small nuisance to an otherwise perfect tabletop piece.

It has a wealth of content for fans

[[VIDEOID:bea8483745c9c32b12c177c54454f40]]Although I can't remember when was the first time I watched Ghostbusters as I was only three when the film came out. I must have caught one of those reruns. But I still remember that I was so fascinated by the film, the visuals and concept. I was also hooked on playing the Ghostbusters games when it came out on the SEGA system. The idea of ghosts running around and there are actually people who would go around catching these ghosts just seems wildly imaginative for me.

Going through this book brings back the sense of wonder and good memories of the first time I watched the films.

This 224-page hardcover is published by Insight Editions. The publisher has designed the book like a scrapbook with several removable items, such as the Ghostbuster name card, a questionnaire for those who watch the preview, booklet of storyboards, schematics of props, a transparent sheet with labels overlayed onto the slime blower tank prop, and other notes.

The removable items are a nice touch but they could have just been printed on the actual pages. They are sticked onto the pages and to read the content beneath you have to remove or push them away. Nice but not really necessary.

The book's divided into three parts, the first two parts cover the two films and the last part looks at the expanded universe.

There's a wealth of content in the form of lots of wonderful set photography, artworks and a detailed writeup into the making of the two films. It's a very satisfying read, especially when it comes to understanding how they actually create the ghosts, props and visual effects to make everything look believable. My favourite bits are for Slimer and Stay Puff marshmallow man who are my favourite characters. LOL. There are also lots of other ghosts featured, and the actors who have to wear the ghost suits.

The famous and iconic Ghostbusters car is also featured, of course. There's the original from the first film and the modified version in the second.

The last part for the expanded universe talks about the video games, toys, comics, animation and other merchandise. I don't follow Ghostbusters except for their films and that particular one game I played, so this section has a lot of things I'm seeing for the first time.

This really is a fantastic book for the fans.

An amazing book. The only thing missing seems to be a chapter on the Live Stage Show and Theme Park Presence from Universal Studios Florida. Otherwise, this book is a MUST HAVE for any Ghostbuster fan! I'll be ordered a second to leave in the shrink wrap, because I promise you I will wear the first copy out from pouring over it!

I have a BS in EE, pursuing a teaching degree in Physics. This text is being used for a Physics undergrad course in Electronics. It has several typographical errors in both the text and end of chapter problems in the first two chapters. In addition, the explanations are dense and unhelpful, and the derivations skip steps without explanation. This text should not be used; there must be several better written texts, even if you need to delve into those meant strictly for Electrical Engineering coursework.

Had Martin Plonus spent more time proofing his text he would not have wasted so much of mine. My class found errors in the abbreviated derivations, examples, homework problems, and even one conceptual error. This book has far too many errors to be of much quantitative use. I would wait for a corrected edition to become available or simply use another text.

Differential equations first appeared in the late seventeenth century in the work of Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, and the Bernoulli brothers, Jakob and Johann. They occurred as a natural consequence of the efforts of these great scientists to apply the new ideas of the calculus to certain problems in mechanics, such as the paths of motion of celestial bodies and the brachistochrone problem, which asks along which path from point P to point Q a frictionless object would descend in the least time. For over 300 years, differential equations have served as an essential tool for describing and analyzing problems in many scientific disciplines. Their importance has motivated generations of mathematicians and other scientists to develop methods of studying properties of their solutions, ranging from the early techniques of finding exact solutions in terms of elementary functions to modern methods of analytic and numerical approximation. Moreover, they have played a central role in the development of mathematics itself since questions about differential equations have spawned new areas of mathematics and advances in analysis, topology, algebra, and geometry have often offered new perspectives for differential equations.

This book provides an introduction to many of the important topics associated with ordinary differential equations. The material in the first six chapters is accessible to readers who are familiar with the basics of calculus, while some undergraduate analysis is needed for the more theoretical subjects covered in the final two chapters. The needed concepts from linear algebra are introduced with examples, as needed. Previous experience with differential equations is helpful but not required. Consequently, this book can be used either for a second course in ordinary differential equations or as an introductory course for well-prepared students.

The first chapter contains some basic concepts and solution methods that will be used throughout the book. Since the discussion is limited to first-order equations, the ideas can be presented in a geometrically simple setting. For example, dynamics for a first-order equation can be described in a one-dimensional space. Many essential topics make an appearance here: existence, uniqueness, intervals of existence, variation of parameters, equilibria, stability, phase space, and bifurcations. Since proofs of existence-uniqueness theorems tend to be quite technical, they are reserved for the last chapter.

Systems of linear equations are the major topic of the second chapter. An unusual feature is the use of the Putzer algorithm to provide a cc9nstructive method for solving linear systems with constant coefficients. The study of stability for linear systems serves as a foundation for nonlinear systems in the next chapter. The important case of linear systems with periodic coefficients (Floquet theory) is included in this chapter.

Chapter 3, on autonomous systems, is really the heart of the subject and the foundation for studying differential equations from a dynamical viewpoint. The discussion of phase plane diagrams for two-dimensional systems contains many useful geometric ideas. Stability of equilibria is investigated by both Liapunov's direct method and the method of linearization. The most important methods for studying limit cycles, the Poincare-Bendixson theorem and the Hopf bifurcation theorem, are included here. The chapter also contains a brief look at complicated behavior in three dimensions and at the use of Mathematics for graphing solutions of differential equations. We give proofs of many of the results to illustrate why these methods work, but the more intricate verifications have been omitted in order to keep the chapter to a reasonable length and level of difficulty.

Perturbation methods, which are among the most powerful techniques for finding approximations of solutions of differential equations, are introduced in Chapter 4. The discussion includes singular perturbation problems, an important topic that is usually not covered in undergraduate texts.

The next two chapters return to linear equations and present a rich mix of classical subjects, such as self-adjointness, disconjugacy, Green's functions, Riccati equations, and the calculus of variations.

Since many applications involve the values of a solution at different input values, boundary value problems are studied in Chapter 7. The contraction mapping theorem and continuity methods are used to examine issues of existence, uniqueness, and approximation of solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems.

The final chapter contains a thorough discussion of the theoretical ideas that provide a foundation for the subject of differential equations. Here we state and prove the classical theorems that answer the following questions about solutions of initial value problems: Under what conditions does a solution exist, is it unique, what type of domain does a solution have, and what changes occur in a solution if we vary the initial condition or the value of a parameter? This chapter is at a higher level than the first six chapters of the book.

There are many examples and exercises throughout the book. A significant number of these involve differential equations that arise in applications to physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, and other areas. To avoid lengthy digressions, we have derived these equations from basic principles only in the simplest cases.

Virginia Slims got it right "You've Come a Long Way, Baby".

I didn't find this quite as funny as it was made out to be, but there were moments I chuckled out loud. However, it was very informative, well researched, and very, very interesting. I won't go in to details, mainly because most of them are too gross for this forum, but it's amazing how women were treated, thought of, and expected to behave back then; not to mention the general uncleanliness that was the norm of that day. I am beyond thankful for our foremothers that had the strength to fight for improving the lot of all women. I am also exceedingly thankful for hypo-allergenic makeup, the ladies' aisle in the grocery store, showers, indoor plumbing that flushes, toilet paper, the ability to wear pants, and not to have to wear crotchless underwear under my skirts to so I can use a chamber pot with fewer issues.

... bits of information on what Victorian life was really like for women

Well-researched and full of nifty little bits of information on what Victorian life was really like for women. The author takes us back to mid-century 1800s and switches between US and England telling us what our life as a wealthy woman would be like going into detail about the naughty bits, the toilette, the marriage bed, disease, etc. She also takes us downstairs as we learn to deal with servants, housekeeping and cooking. The book is easy-breezy to read and the author takes a laissez-faire attitude pushing jokes and puns throughout. As a voracious reader of Victoriana mostly interested in the downstairs and back alleys, I didn't find much I didn't already know but it was fun having a book devoted to the topics. The only thing that annoyed me was the author's poking fun at everything. It started off cute but just got more and more irratating as the book went on, until I got to a point where I just wished she'd stop. It would have been wiser, and easier on the reader, if she had opened each chapter with the teasing and sarcasm and then got down to the business at hand of imparting her knowledge.

Digital book of poor quality and writing style takes away from interesting look at Victorian Era

I didn't like the way it was written as if the writer was talking directly to me as if I was transported back in time. If she called me Cherie, darling or other cutsie names one more time, I would have hit her over the head, if I could have.
I liked the content but it was so heavily buried by the tone and opinion of the writer that it really grew tiresome. Just give me the facts, right? Not in this book.
For the price, I would have thought they could have done a better job with the digital format. Every picture had a caption that was not with the picture but instead on the next page. Some of the captions weren't even readable. For 18.00 I expect way better formatting!!!
I have read better books on this time period and I had high expectations for this book but I am embarrassed to even share that I paid for it. It's just so over the top cheesy. And it would be half the length if it wasn't inundated with nonsense.
