William Joyce Interviews Nicholas St. North

Before he was Santa, Nicholas St. North led an exciting life full of daring adventures. William Joyce interviews the future Mr. Claus about his past, the other Guardians, and what he thinks of the cast of colorful characters that live at the North Pole.

William Joyce: When you were younger, where did you think you'd end up?

Nicholas St. North: Well, they didn't have Las Vegas when I was a kid. Or Disney World, so those just weren't an option. I'm kidding. KIDDING. But the North Pole? Never saw myself there.

Joyce: How do you think you came across in my telling of your story?

Nick St. North: Much better than I expected, to be honest, and since I'm Santa Claus I am, you know, I'm always honest. Your portrayal of me is you know, balanced. You got the good me and the ... wild me. I'm certainly jolly and you caught that. And the temper thing ... you didn't shy away from that. And the bravery and the fun. The fun me. I liked that. Because I'm, you know, fun. FUN! A fun guy.

Joyce: Could you tell us a little about the Guardians of Childhood?

Nick St. North: Great group. The best. Really. So glad to be a member. Sandman, Man in the Moon, Tooth Fairy, the Egg guy, that Frost kid ... just terrific. We all have our own thing, but we work together very, very well. Fighting the Boogeyman, Pitch is his real name. Not many people know that. But, yeah, I think we do a lotta good work together.

Joyce: Which Guardian would you choose to stand beside you in the thick of battle?

Nick St. North: Oh ... now. That's, that's, you know ... They are all, ALL great in their own way. All so talented. Geniuses! I mean it! Even, you know, the egg guy.

Joyce:What do you think makes you such a great Guardian?

Nick St. North: Oh, that's ... No ... I can't ... you're so kind ... Look, I just try to be the best Santa I can be. Firm. Friendly, but fair. That's sort of the motto.

Joyce: If you had a chance to change one thing in your past, would you? What would it be?

Nick St. North: You know, I ... Can we just not go there?

Joyce: If you could learn one bug or animal language, what would it be?

Nick St. North: Gosh. I know almost all of them. That's how I get a lot of my info on the naughty or nice thing. Pets are usually very reliable for that. I speak fluent hamster, which is good, because hamsters, they know EVERYTHING. I even speak leech. Which isn't much help really. There are some Irish accents I have trouble with. I love how they sound, but I need subtitles if it's a movie. And the Jersey Shore kids. Can't understand a word.

Joyce: How are the elves to work with?

Nick St. North: Well, we are all old, old friends. We've known each other since day one. But, honestly, I wish they were a little taller.

Joyce: Taller, you say?

Nick St. North: Yes. They get stepped on A LOT. Especially by the Yeti. It gets messy.

Joyce: Yeti? You mean Abominable Snowmen?

Nick St. North: "Abominable" is not the preferred designation. As native Himalayans, they prefer "Yeti" or Abominable Snowperson.

Joyce: So you have Abominable Snowpersons working at the North Pole?

Nick St. North: Oh yes! They actually do most of the toy development and construction. Which I am still, like, amazed by. I mean their fingers are huge, HUGE. Big as bean bag chairs. But they can do detail work! All the little stuff--eyes on dolls, you name it. They're also awesome warriors, super tidy and excellent at baking. Their cookies? Outta control and Low Cal.

Joyce: What about the elves? They don’t do toys?

Nick St. North: No, no, no, no. That's a huge misconception. The elves just play with the toys as sort of market testing ... to see if they're, you know, fun. Otherwise they're just sort of custodial ... sweeping, mopping. Oh! And they do party decorations and caroling. 20,000 elves singing 'Oh, Christmas Tree'? I get teary just talking about it.

Joyce: What do you think would have happened to you if you weren't chosen to be a Guardian?

Nick St. North: Definitely not retail or politics. They're too, too, I don't know ... pushy. I've always liked gardening. Landscape architect? Or social work? Or maybe directing. Features only. No TV.

Joyce: How would you most like to be remembered?

Nick St. North: Probably the whole Christmas Day thing. And my work with reindeer. Proud of that. And the kids. Yeah. My work with the kids, that's the biggie.

Review
"Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King stole my son! The book came into our house, and the boy disappeared, for hours. Eventually he returned, but it seems that his imagination never came all the way back. A part of him will always remain tangled in the deep, dark, dazzling, insouciant mythology of this latest and most wonderful of William Joyce's worlds."

--Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay"

"The authors do a great job of creating excitement and intrigue, and for those who love to wend their way through extraordinary tales, this novel will not disappoint. The illustrations are wonderful charcoal, graphite, and digital renderings that convey all the magic and fear contained within the story. Fans of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's Peter and the Starcatchers (Hyperion, 2004) may want to give this book a try."

SLJ, January 2012

"Joyce's detailed illustrations capture the multitude of fantastical settings, weapons, and creatures populating this fast-paced tale."

"William Joyce's magnificently creative illustrations, rendered in charcoal, graphite, and digital media have an old world feel that extends the text. In the world of fantasy, this book rises above the rest."

Beautifully written enchanted story
By Trisha
My eight year old son and five year old daughter absolutely loved this book. They said the details in the story allowed them to have a vivid understanding of what was happening in the story and really evision the scenes. Once we started, they didn't want to stop. It created for several late night reads (past bedtime) as they just couldn't stop reading because they wanted to know what happened next. Excellent book.

Engaging story in an unusual setting
By E. Strickenburg
This enchanting tale glitters with the magic of the far north. An ancient evil has been unleashed on the unsuspecting village of Santoff Claussen: the evil Nightmare King and his army of Fearlings have come to steal the dreams of innocent children and replace them with terrors of the night. It's up to the learned wizard Ombric, his young protégé Katherine, and the swashbuckling theif-turned-hero Nicholas St. North (who will one day be known as Santa Claus) to save the day.

The story unfolds in a world of magic and wonder, but as fantasy worlds go it's a surprising and unusual one. There are aspects that are recognizable as our own world: the village of Santoff Claussen is set in old Russia, a battle takes place in the Himalayas, and the characters are familiar with Leonardo da Vinci. At the same time, it's a fairy tale world, full of wizards from Atlantis, protective moonbeams, fighting fireflies, and benevolent bears. The fairy tale world blends with science fiction when space travel and talking robots arrive on the scene. Not to mention the fact that Santa Claus and the Man in the Moon make an appearance. It's an engaging and interesting world, but an odd mix of genres.

The tale is filled with action and adventure, and good triumphs over evil. Themes of friendship, imagination, and facing one's fear are strong in the book. While at times the plot and setting seem a bit forced, it's overall an enjoyable read.

A fantasy novel set out to invade the dreams of the magical Earth's children
By Didaskalex
*****
"Helping a legend like William Joyce bring his vision to life is a dream come true ... The Guardians of Childhood will delight the imaginations of children and their parents for generations to come." --Jon Anderson, Publisher
*

This fantasy novel for younger readers is a wonderful escapade into C. S. Lewis's credible magical world, that revived in my memory "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". This admirable continuation of the story initiated in "The Man in the Moon" invites William Joyce to join the Legendary troubadours Hans Christian Andersen, Peter Pan's Barrie, and Harry Potter's Rowling, the most friendly story tellers children and their parents have ever got. The Guardians of Childhood series tells the formative stories of childhood legends including Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny.

Talented author and artist William Joyce reveals the story behind childhood icons as Santa in Nicholas St. North, following 'The Man in the Moon', in his new series Guardians of Childhood. Set out to invade the dreams of magical Earth's children, an evil nightmare Lord Pitch, escapes his ancient bonds. Old wizard Ombric stands in his way. His former apprentice Nicholas St. North, their mechanical djinni and the girl Katherine, join in building the dramatic events, along side with a gang of Himalayan lamas, fighting trees, domesticated bears, and armed Yetis, in a milieu of Russian folklore. The story is narrated in good English, marked by virtues and fancy, in an delightful setting.

The first chapter book, presented to 'young rascal' Jack Joyce and his sister Mary is co-authored by their dad, William Joyce and Laura Geringer, and beautifully illustrated by Joyce: "North knew exactly what his first experiment would be. He would make a mechanical man of magic-a robot djinni that would do wonders, but only when commanded. ... Clean! Help the children with their studies... What could be wrong with that? As for Ombric, he'd keep a watchful eye on his apprentice, but in truth, he was glad to have North distracted and even gladder at how North occupied the children.... They had only checked him, like players in a game of chess. And the old wizard knew that the game is far from over."

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - The Coming of the Fairies, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

It's hard to believe that less then 100 years ago people still believed in Faries. However when two young English school girls took a number of photographs showing themselves playing with little winged people many people were taken in. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creators of Sherlock Holmes the most logical fictional character of all time) deeply believed in Spiritualism and in the existence of fairies. Doyle was completely taken in by the hoax. This is his account of the practical joke that fooled the British nation for four years.

There are fairies at the bottom of our garden
By Phelps Gates
A delightful book. In 1920, two girls in Yorkshire took photos which they said showed fairies in the woods near their home. The pictures are such obvious fakes (made with paper cutouts, as the girls later admitted) that it's amazing to think anyone could be taken in. And yet many were, including the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who wrote this book! This is a reprint, with an introduction explaining how Conan Doyle's life experiences set him up to be fooled. The book discusses, in great detail, the behavior and origins of fairies (in the scheme of Darwinian evolution), along with numerous accounts of eyewitness sightings (remarkably, one is by someone blind since birth!). The book is so well argued that by the time I finished it, I was starting to think that there might be something to COnan Doyle's claims about fairies.....

Excellent book preceded by a harangue under the guise of an introduction.
By Mystical Minds Bookstore
I would not recommend that anyone purchase this particular edition of The Coming of The Fairies by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, not because of the text, but because of the Introduction by John M. Lynch. Although I have no knowledge of the two other editions carried by Amazon.com of The Coming of The Fairies I would recommend that anyone interested in this book consider purchasing one of them instead.

After years of running across references to this work by Sherlock Holmes' creator, I decided it was time to acquire a copy so I could see what Conan Doyle had to say about the Cottingley Photographs for myself. The description on Amazon.com indicated an introduction by a Mr. Lynch, but did not indicate that the "introduction" was in fact a 22-page harangue attacking the girls who took the photographs, Spiritualism, Theosophy, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, amongst others. I will certainly not purchase any other works that John M. Lynch is associated with, or any published by the University of Nebraska Press. While they certainly have the right to publish any opinion they want on this or any other subject, to promote the book as a simply a reproduction of a text by someone of the stature of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and then to use his work as a platform to attack the original work, is at best false advertising, and may even qualify as a form of plagiarism.

Wasting no time in going on the attack, the opening paragraph of Mr. Lynch's introduction impugns the state of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mental health at the time that he wrote this piece. Without having the courage to accept personal responsibility for this charge, , he attributes it to others by wording it as: "Some have seen this announcement in The Strand magazine and Doyle's subsequent book The Coming of the Fairies as the writings of a sixty-one-year-old who was losing his ability to think rationally".

As someone who passed the sixty-one-year-old point in his life several years ago, and who has spent much of the last forty years studying the history of this period, I find that Mr. Lynch's statements follow the typical modern skeptic's tactics of attacking without providing any material to support their accusations or conclusions.

For example, in numerous places in the introduction he attacks the character of the girls who took the photographs, baldly stating that the photographs were faked, referring to them as "A Hoax Revealed", without supplying any supporting data to back up his accusations, just stating that "Eighty years later we know that the photos were faked..." asking us to accept this conclusion simply on the merit that if he said it, then it must be true. He goes on to make the charge that the girls, some eighty after the events described in the text, had admitted using pictures from Princess Mary's Gift Book, published in 1914 as a model for constructing figures they then used to fake the photographs. Either Mr. Lynch has not seen this book, or he has assumed that no one reading his introduction would take the trouble to gain access to it, or both, or I doubt that he would have made this charge.

Princess Mary's Gift Book can be accessed and downloaded from the Library of the University of California, Los Angeles. A review of this collection of short stories and poems reveals only two illustrations in the book's 178 pages that relate to Fairies, and neither of them correlates to any image, or even the style of image of those found in the photographs done by the girls.

I found it also interesting that beginning on page 23, of Princess Mary's Gift Book is an story by the title of: "Bimbashi Joyce", by one A. Conan Doyle, Author of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", with Painting and Drawings by R. Talbot Kelly, R.I.

By repeating the charge, not made for the first time until in the early 1980's, that the girls had used the images in this book to fake the photographs, Mr. Lynch would have us believe that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had reached such a point of diminished mental capacity by the time that he was inspecting the Cottingley Photographs, that he would have failed to recognize any similarities between the fairies appearing in the photographs, and artwork appearing in a publication in which his own writings had appeared just six years previously. Additionally, the Cottingley Photographs caused such a stir in England at the time they were made public, that I am sure that if a case could have been made to connect the photographs to illustrations to be found in a book published by the King and Queen of England's daughter for charity, that any number of the people doing their best to prove the photos to be faked would have (1) been aware of the book Princess Mary's Gift Book, and (2) would not have hesitated to bring any similarities between the photographs and the book to the public's attention, at that time.

A Fairy-Fellow's Master Stroke
By The Wingchair Critic
Back in print after over half a century due to the efforts of the University of Nebraska Press, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's curious 'The Coming of the Fairies' (2006, originally 1922) examines the key events surrounding the Cottingley fairy photograph phenomenon that swept England in the early 1920s. Despite the unfortunate inclusion of one frivolous chapter, 'Observations Of A Clairvoyant,' which was written by "an anonymous seer," the book is an interesting, if not always credible, exploration of its highly unusual subject.

Today, the photographs--which were recently exhibited in New York City--typically elicit one of two polarized responses: bemused academics, scientists, and the rational 'average man' dismiss them out of hand as clear and obvious fakes, while some New Age adherents, who are perhaps also sentimentalists, tend to find at least some of the photographs convincingly authentic.

The text on this edition's back cover--and its perfunctory introduction by Arizona State University Professor John M. Lynch--make it abundantly clear where the University of Nebraska Press stands on the issue: fairies, are, of course, an impossibility, scientific or otherwise.

But Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of master rationalist detective Sherlock Homes, was hardly so certain of their lack of reality himself. Though he qualifies his initial opinions at every turn, and stresses the objective evaluation the photographs received by a number of expert sources, including Kodak, even his early paragraphs fairly burst with unbridled enthusiasm and barely suppressed belief.

At the time that the photographs initially came to light, Conan Doyle was mourning the loss of a son who died in the Great War, which in turn led the author to an active investigation of Spiritualism. Proof of the existence of fairies was ultimately of secondary interest to him; what he desperately sought was proof of an afterlife, and hence, the continued existence of his son on another plane ("...and once fairies are admitted other psychic phenomena will find a more ready acceptance."). If Spiritualism offered largely intangible 'evidence' of the transmigration of the soul if it offered any at all, tangible evidence of fairies generally bolstered Conan Doyle's rapidly evolving belief in an unseen world.

To complicate matters, like the confusion surrounding the infamous debunking of the 'Surgeon's Photo' that purported to reveal the Loch Ness Monster (and the subsequent revelation that the 'truth' might have itself have been a hoax), at the end of their lives, the two photographers in question, cousins Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, openly admitted to an eager media that the photographs had been faked. But then Frances, who died first, waffled--by 'revealing' that only some of the photographs were faked, and nevertheless insisted, right up until her death in 1986, that she and her cousin had encountered, interacted with, and photographed fairies "at the beck" and near "the bottom of the garden" in 1917.

While most of the fairies in the photographs do unmistakably resemble two-dimensional paper cut-outs like those the girls would have found in their copy of 'Princess Mary's Gift Book' (1914), the photograph usually known as 'Elsie and the Gnome' is remarkable due to the fairly complex position in which the 'gnome' is standing (no such figure was featured in Princess Mary's Gift Book, and thus not obtainable from that source), as well as due to Elsie's weirdly elongated, almost deformed, right hand and fingers, which one party in the text explains by stating that the young lady merely had physically unusual hands (another oft-repeated theory is that Elsie was holding her left hand partially behind the right, which, thus positioned, appear as one long appendage).

The hazy 'fairy bower' photograph, which features multiple figures, including a very tiny 'elf' resembling Prince Valiant emerging from the bracken (and whose head is reflected in its own wing, proving that the figures could not be made of simple paper) also seems beyond the artistic and technical skills of two young girls almost completely unfamiliar with the rudimentary camera equipment of the era.

Certainly the photographs are open to interpretation: in observing the gnome figure, one party discusses its 'beard,' another its partially hidden 'pipes,' and yet another the hat pin which the party believes was utilized to support the cut-out. Readers may see all of these things or none of them; no mention is made of the gnome's pronounced Pinocchio-like nose, or its brimmed and conical cap, which resembles a traditional witch's hat.

The basis for two excellent films, 'Fairy Tale: A True Story' and the darker 'Photographing Fairies' (both 1997), 'The Coming of the Fairies' ultimately raises more questions than it answers about skill, chance, credulity, psychology, fading cultural romanticism, the sociology of logic, and the nature and motivation of belief.

Those seeking books of greater substance on the same topic may also want to read Robert Kirk's 'The Secret Commonwealth: Of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies' (New York Review Books Classics), William Butler Yeats' classic 'The Celtic Twilight: Faerie and Folklore' (1893), Lady Gregory's outstanding 'Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland' (1920), and Carole G. Silver's 'Strange & Secret Peoples: Fairies & Victorian Consciousness' (2000).

So Satisfying
By Kallipolis Rex
There's a large body of work that, it seemed, doesn't exist anymore: scorching hot action and true love. It was around before the late 1980's, but then disease came and devastated our community. In its wake, that disease left a culture of spurning love, embracing bitterness, and taking good sex where it could be found--if it could be found--because there was no such thing as "forever," anymore. I found this short work to be a delightful return to the porn that I grew up on in the 1980's. Showcasing hot men who not only want each other, they *want* each other is a much-missed quality. I am so pleased to see that it has returned.

One of the chief eat tools that our enemies have had at the beck-and-call has been the fact that even our own stories tell of a gay life wrought in misery, loneliness, rejection, and "the wages of 'sin'." That pieces like this exist--hot, unrelentingly gay and kinky, but imbued with true love that tugs at the heart--takes that weapon away. It is natural to be gay, it is ok to be into what you're into so long as no one is harmed, and it is healthy and worthwhile to risk truly being loved.

I just loved this story. Bravo!

Needed more depth to satisfy me
By Charly T. Anchor
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 5/10

PROS:
- This is a kink I haven’t read much about, and I enjoyed seeing something so out of the ordinary.
- Jack’s actions are written in such a way that he is portrayed similarly to a skittish horse, which I found fascinating.
- At first, I was apprehensive about the fact that Jack’s former partner arranged to have Jack immersed in such an unfamiliar situation without his permission. But the author alleviated my concerns quickly with a few well-timed comments about how it was the man could have known that the arrangement was something Jack wanted.

CONS:
- The story felt a bit claustrophobic to me in that there are almost no secondary characters. Once Jack gets dropped off at the barn, it’s just him and Daniel. I think seeing some other people who are into the same kink would have gone a long way toward alleviating Jack’s anxiety over what he considers to be an abnormal longing in himself. On top of that, there’s very little depth to Daniel because the story is short, it’s told from Jack’s POV, and there aren’t any in-depth conversations through which we see the men really getting to know each other.
- Much as I enjoyed reading about a kink with which I’m mostly unfamiliar, the level of detail was frustratingly sparse for me. Daniel says at one point, for instance, “You’re clearly a colt. That, I gleaned for myself, though, he’d put in ‘colt/pony boy’. You’re a colt, though, through and through…” and then Jack thinks, “I don’t even know what the difference is.” Well, I didn’t know the difference between “colt” and “pony boy” either, and the story never explained it to me.

Overall comments: There’s the start of something interesting here, but 708 Kindle locations isn’t enough to adequately explore a kink that’s brand new for someone, especially if his initial exploration of that kink is a full 2 weeks of 24/7 immersion. I wanted to see a bit more of the exploration itself, but I also wanted to see what happens when the characters go back to their everyday lives.

3.75 Stars for hot PWP with pony play kinks!
By SheReadsALot
A Hearts On Fire Review

3.75 STARS--"I'm going to let you come, colt. Christen the stall."

*gallops wildly*

Sean Michael's "Pony Play" is book #3 from the standalone series Sealed with a Kink. And what a kinky little filly this was (I have so many bad horse jokes, it's not even funny...okay maybe a little)

This story is filled will pony play, penis piercings and enemas, oh my! I will admit this is not my first prance around the pony play paddock. However there was great equipment detail that I looked into deeper on a pony play fetish website...it helps visualize the bits, harnesses, etc.

Jack is sort of kidnapped onto a kinky two week vacation by his ex-lover. His ex leaves him with groom/Master Daniel at a BDSM/pony play training stable. (Side note: The MC's names are Jack and Daniel...LOL) I had to suspend reality and take a trip off the reality trail for a moment of two. Why? A grown man is sort of kidnapped and left with a stranger to participate in an act that he did not consent to? There were minor quibbles but he just went along with it...I neighed with disbelief during those moments.

While suspending reality with my treats of apples and carrot sticks (a true pony boy diet), Jack and Daniel played in some yummy scenes. Harnesses and nipple piercing and reins...Jack learned he was a true pony boy/sub in this 24/7 lifestyle. All Jack wants is someone to call his own who will accept him kinks and all. Luckily, groom/Master Daniel fit the criteria and was as unattached as Jack.

The story is less than 50 pages but was full on the kink. Kinksters will definitely nicker and neigh in kinky delight with this short. Don't expect too much depth or length. Do expect a couple of hot scenes.

"Pony Play" ends with a strong HFN/ light HEA ending. And I'd definitely wouldn't have minded a couple more chapters with the couple. It was a fun read, great for when you want a kinky snack.

Smart Way for Studying Proverbs
By Muhammad A. AlMubarak
This book is really cool. I am very pleased indeed to recommend it for those studying proverbs. The author of this book, Mr. Harry Collis, is so smart. He presented a very good number of common English proverbs in a genius way of learning. It is to learn and have fun in the same time. He really wants his readers to sit down, relax, read, learn, and laugh!!!
He, first, had had his book illustrated with vary funny cartoons, which make the readers zealous to read and read. Secondly, the readers, then, will read a dialogue and within each dialogue they will learn and comprehend a proverb in the same time. Namely, both the proverb and its meaning are clearly explained inside the dialogue, not to mention, they are bolded.
I am sure that those whose mother language is not English will find studying proverbs as well as idioms is much easer than learning English vocabularies.

Enjoyable reading for non-native and native English speakers
By A Customer
SO far, so good! My students enjoy these "proverbs" and lively discussion ensues. Some of the example scenarios using the expressions aren't that great - sometimes a bit elevated for intermediate ESL sudents. So just make up your own...

Dead Men Walking (Warhammer 40,000 Novels), by Steve Lyons

Deep beneath a mining planet, an ancient enemy slumbers, waiting for the time to awaken and reclaim what is theirs. When the necrons rise, the world descends into a cauldron of war and the remorseless foes decimate the human defenders. Salvation comes in an unlikely form - the Death Korps of Kreig, a force designed for the most brutal of conflicts and as unfeeling as the Necrons themselves. When the two powers go to war, casualties are high and the magnitude of the destruction is unimaginable. Can the most shadowy of Imperial Guard regiments triumph, and what will the price of victory be?

An impetuous writing style, rooted in the dark imagery of warfare.
By Detra Fitch
None are more unfeeling than the Death Korps of Krieg. A Krieg Guardsman has no hopes, no dreams, no desires, nothing but his orders. As far as he is concerned, there is nothing left but a violent end. Now they are ordered to a mining planet named Hieronymous Theta where, after sleeping deep underground for millions of years, the Necrons are awakening. The planet is rich in minerals, a valuable resource to the Imperium, thus not to be given up easily.

Mine overseer Gunthar Soreson never considered himself to be a hero. He would rather run than fight. But when it becomes plain to see that the Planetary Defense Force is ill equipped to deal with the remorseless metal warriors and Arex, the woman he loves, is trapped within the sealed capital city, Gunthar has no choice in the matter. Gunthar will train and then fight with the Death Korps of Krieg to either rescue Arex or wipe out her killers.

**** FOUR STARS! There is an interesting mix of unemotional characters on both sides of this war. After finishing the book, I still find myself uncertain as to which is stonier, the Necrons or the Krieg Guardsmen. The author also follows a few civilians, breaking up the morbidity of endless battles in favor of showing the realistic and not always humane reactions of humans during the fallout.

Author Steve Lyons has an impetuous writing style, rooted in the dark imagery of warfare, which kept me enthralled from start to finish. ****

Not your typical Imperial Guard novel
By Iratebooks
First, a disclaimer:

In my experience, most stories regarding servicemen tend to be quite formulaic and generic. Apart from the war and battle scenes they find themselves in, the rest of the story is mainly about barracks room drama and their personality clashes and conflicts with one another, and lots of minor dramas they have with other characters on their own side, e.g with civilians, wives, spouses, superior officers, whatever. There will also be a lot of filler material dedicated to enlightening the reader about a particular character's quirks and habits, and the more self-indulgent authors may even drag these bits out into entire chapters by themselves. This seems to be the standard approach to building characters that the reader can feel and root for.

Unfortunately I find this approach utterly boring.

I don't like filler, and I don't like reading details that are in the end utterly irrelevant to the story at hand. I don't like reading about characters for their own sake. I don't like simple and uninspiring plotlines being held aloft and then lengthened by mountains of loquaciousness over every insignificant detail. I like my stories tightly written. In hindsight it isn't a surprise that my experiences with the Gaunt's Ghosts series have not been as enjoyable as I'd hoped, and left me with an aversion to picking up any novel regarding the common soldier that makes up the bulk of the Emperor's warriors.

Thus, it was with great trepidation when I finally picked up this book at the behest of a friend's recommendation.

Dead Men Walking is not your typical Imperial Guard novel. It is set in the 40k setting and it has familiar factions involved - Death Korps Imperial Guard versus Necrons - but the main characters in this story aren't of any Guardsmen. Instead we are given a view of how events unfold through the eyes and experiences of a cast of mainly civilians and non-combatants caught in between the Necrons and their supposed saviours, the Death Korps of Krieg.

Thus, readers expecting a Guard novel centering around the lives, exploits and heroics of Imperial Guardsmen may find themselves disappointed with the story paying more attention to the perspectives of non-combatant characters. I think that for this reason alone many readers may not be able to enjoy this book as it does not conform to their expectations.

Dead Men Walking is not without its action scenes and gripping accounts of heroics. The plot progresses very smoothly and there is a very steady escalation of threat and direness of the situations the characters find themselves in. The characters fight well against the Necrons, in the ways they are able. The characters are taxed beyond their limits by the circumstances they find themselves in, and yet for all that, this isn't a story with a happy ending.

This story has one of the most intense endings that I have ever read. Most other stories have epilogues and endings just to tie up loose ends and place simple and easy closures on plotlines already ended a chapter or two back. The ending in Dead Men Walking is gripping, tense, and eminently memorable, but you would only feel that as well if you had the patience to follow the characters from the beginning of the story to its end. This is a story that closes with a bang.

If I had to sum up what Dead Men Walking is about in one paragraph, I would say that this isn't so much a tale of heroism or of humanity's indomitable spirit against overwhelming odds, but one of human frailty and limits. Because of this, and because it is well written, it is one of the better books in the Black Library catalogue for the additional depth it gives to the 40k universe.

good effort but...
By 24mech
Good effort by the author in trying to put the inhumane and stoic guardsmen of the death korps in a very human conflict against a terrifying and alien enemy. unfortunately as the story progresses the death korps becomes the background instead of the main subject. As expected of a imperial guard novel the reader expected more action and focus on the death korps troopers...but the beleaguered planets PDF received as much attention as the guardsmen.
